According to estimates, the Packers have 35 million in cap room right now. Since they don't have a high first round pick, their draft class is not likely to use up a huge portion of this. Assuming they don't sign a high ticket free agent (and there aren't many left out there), who should they use the money on to extend contracts?

I would say the first priority would be Greg Jennings (I think he has two years left). But who do you extend after that? Hawk has 3 years to go on his contract. Ryan Grant would be someone to consider. However, I don't see any real obvious needs for extensions. What do others think?

Well, if say, Rodgers looks great for the first 12 games, they may want to add a year or two to his deal so they're not stuck coughing up a mega-deal to keep him in 2009, but that's entirely speculative. Perhaps even out KGB's deal and add a year or two to the end, as it's apparent now that he's not going anywhere. Pickett could probably be re-done, Tauscher could probably have a slight extension added so he finishes his career here.

Others who could earn extensions this season besides perhaps Rodgers, who as I said at this point is a bit of a stretch, would be Grant, as you mentioned, Bibgy if he continues to ascend, and IF (I wish I could put that in about 56-point font) he stays healthy and moves towards his potential, Blackmon could have a year or two added to his deal, as GB needs to start preparing for guys like Harris to lose it at any time.

Of all those mentioned, I agree with Jennings most of all. There are asterisks or at least contingencies in place for everyone else. However, anyone who shows well this season, assuming GB will have a ton of cap room, should be extended with a one-time roster bonus to count against this year's cap, making any extension easy to swallow in subsequent years.

Good thread.

1. Kampman: for obvious reasons
2. Jennings: same
3. Pickett: same

Other than that, I don't see anyone deserving of cash now. Other players fall in categories like: just extended or given more cash (Tauscher, Driver, Harris, Barnett), haven't proven themselves for a long enough time (Lee, Jolly, Rodgers, all first year players), have too much time left on their contracts (Clifton, Hawk, Woodson), or just don't deserve one (Collins, Kabeer, all guards).

I believe that teams need to use a minimum of 75% of the cap number.

I tried to delete my post before someone could reply since I just found the answer on the cap page at the top. It says it's 86.4%.

Must signs...Kampman, Jennings (if Rodgers has a great year, put him here)
Should signs...Tauscher, Jolly, Pickett
Would be OK to sign...Spitz, Collins
Adios...Clifton, Moll, Colledge, Muir

There aren't any available free agents worthy of a blockbuster deal, so I agree with those who think the bulk should be spent on current Packers who have outplayed their contracts.

I'd say Ryan Pickett is the most underpaid player on the team, followed by Aaron Kampman. Both vital players on the defensive line. I also agree that Jennings is in line for a pay raise. Tauscher and Clifton have proven to be valuable, so modest increases to their contracts should at least be considered.

If Ryan Grant shows the same skill he did this past season, he'll also deserve a larger contract.

Does anyone the figures for what our draft choices will count against the cap this year?

IMHO must take care of:

Jennings
Rodgers if he has a good year
Kampman (cant let him even come close to sniffing FA)
Jolly is comes back healthy and has a good year
Give Tauscher one last deal
If Grant is solid again they need to lock him up

FRZ's estimate is as accurate as any I'd think given rookie pools are based on selections a team actually makes. We all know the chances GB stays precisely where they are in every round...nil?

Book the off-season player's cruise on a really nice ship in international waters to avoid silly, "Lake Minnetonka" issues.

Under the current deal with the player's union - doesn't the cap go away in 2011?

Technically... but it's understood a new deal will be worked out by then or there would just be a lockout or players strike.

Extend: Tauscher, Muir (if his development continues), Rodgers, Clifton, Kampman, Pickett, Jennings, Jolly and Spitz OR Coston OR Moll OR none of 'em depending on how this season goes. Colledge... ugh...

And, IIRC,an uncapped year in 2010? By the way, why do I feel better about the Packers cap situation than I do about the possibility of me collecting Social Security?

It should also be noted that until Favre officially files the retirement paperwork, he still counts against the cap.
