Thompson obviously made the right decision with Green. He got a ridiculous amount of money to leave. If the money would have been the veterans minimum or a little above, he'd have been a great player to have around. If nothing else, he'd be a great third down back. I still worry about having Grant and Brandon Jackson responsible for blitz pickups which is something that Green was experienced at.

Houston's Green won't play against Saints
AP, Nov 16, 2007 Texans running back Ahman Green won't play Sunday against New Orleans because of a swollen left knee. Coach Gary Kubiak was optimistic early in the week that rest during the bye week would allow Green to play. Kubiak said he wasn't sure how long Green will be out. "He has not responded here over the course of the last couple of weeks in the rest we have given him," Kubiak said Friday Wow, that like what 4 games he's missed now? He's getting paid 8 mil+ for a season where he's racked up all of about 260 yards. Yikes, Shermans push for getting Ahman to the Texans backfiring big time. |

I don't want to hear any sh*t from anyone again about TT's reluctance to sign over the hill vets.

Waddya wanna bet you will? It's too bad Green's apparently all done, but I'm glad he got his money, and that he got it from someone else's coffers and salary cap. |

Me too. I was happy for him when it happened. It was a business decision (both ways), it was nothing personal. I'm just bummed we won't get a better compensatory pick (if we get one at all now) for letting him walk. Fond memories, fear of the unknown, and the ability to pick up a blitz (when was the last time that was brought up around here anyway?) isn't worth $8 Million. |

Is anyone really surprised by this?

I thought that was only based on the contract the departing player receives? Someone help me out here; I know the rules on this are a little fuzzy. |

Compensatory picks, are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. The placement of compensatory picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor.

Thanks for the information. Since salary is considered to be the primary factor, at least we'll still be getting something for him. I thought his level of success (besides postseason honors) with the new team was more of a factor. Regardless, I sincerely doubt that whatever the "proprietary formula" is, that it could be worse than the scheduling rubric where we kept having to play the Cowboys in Dallas (seemingly) every year up until 1997. Maybe not, since that's exactly where we're going the Thursday after turkey day. |

You could see this coming from a mile away. It's just not smart to give big money to running backs that age - even healthy ones. Seattle and Kansas City are currently learning that lesson the hard way.

This thread is funny. I'm pretty sure that American pumpkin pie is pretty good.
About the rushing thing. One of the teams who runs the most often (NE - 5th in attempts) and one of the teams who runs the least (GB - 30th in attempts), have a combined 17-1 record. So much for success in rushing being a predictor of NFL success. If that were true, Minnesota with their 5.8 yards per carry average would be undefeated. How a team uses the running game in context with their overall offense and game plan is more important. So other stats are needed to figure out what a team is really doing - other than the surface things like wins & losses. But, then that is really what matters - right? So let AG go. Replacements will be found. Remeber, TT only has another 12 picks (AT) to get it right next year. |
