Vikings' Udeze, Packers' C. Williams fined
By Greg A. Bedard Friday, Nov 16 2007, 02:23 PM Green Bay - Minnesota Vikings defense end Kenechi Udeze and Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Corey Williams were each fined $7,500 for hits on the quarterback in last Sunday's game at Lambeau Field. Udeze hit Brett Favre in the head in the third quarter and drew a personal foul penalty. The hit left Favre a little dazed, but he continued to play. The fine was for unneccesary roughness (hit to the quarterback's head area). On the next drive, Williams was called and fined for roughing Vikings quarterback Brooks Bollinger when Williams threw Bollinger to the ground. I missed the Williams penalty. I didnt even see a flag for it. |

It was a bad hit. Bad enough that he hit Brooks late, but he also body slammed him. Funny that the 'Queens fans chose to whine about the perfectly legal and ethical hit on Adrian Peterson when they had this hit on display. Tell me that is not the most disingenuous group of fans in the NFL.

There was a flag on the play....it was actually offset though by an offensive interference call against Wade. I love the fact that the guy with the Linus and Snoopy avatar is the one who steps in to preserve Charles Brown's good name. |

Unnecessary roughness.....yes. Charles Martin-like.....not a chance! Williams hit of the QB was perfectly legal. Throwing him down was what got the flag, but at least it was all in one motion during the play. Martin's cheap shot happened after the play was over (or at least after the QB was out of the play). Williams deserved the flag and the fine. But I've seen worse hits/act not even flagged. |

I think both of these fines are unwarranted but the Udeze fine is totally ridiculous. Geez, Favre was running towards the sidelines and Udeze is chasing him full speed. Favre slides and Udeze doesn't fall on him or drill him with his helmet....he goes over Favre and clips the top of Favre's helmet with his hip/side. It sure didn't look intentional, Udeze could have easily done a bellyflop on him and to me it looks like he did his best to avoid Favre considering he is a near-300 pound guy who was going full speed at the time. The fine on him is a total joke. As far as Williams, I think maybe you could justify the penalty because he did rough up Bollinger A LITTLE. But he sure didn't intend to injure Bollinger. I think the fine on him is unwarranted as well, but not as big of a joke as the fine on Udeze. |

The QB's head is completely off limits whether intentional or un-intentional. There was a flag on the play. When I saw both plays I immediately thought they can expect their letter from the league office.
Besides, it's Lord Favre. Everybody knows You don't touch him. |

I think both these fines are pretty weak but especially the one on Udeze, that shouldn't have even drawn a flag. Favre slid at the last possible second and he actually tried to avoid delivering a knockout hit. |

Plus Brett was a ball carrier. I thought helmet hits on ball carriers was legal. Did you hear the ref over the mic telling someone that it was a QB situation? Weak, I agree. BTW, not quite as weak as your whining over the AD hit. |

remember, there is a new term in the NFL Webster's Edition Dictionary: to "charles-martin" someone: verb -to pick someone up and throw them to the turf (if it's astro-turf, the better the bounce). |

I've heard it subtly suggested on the radio that Williams hit may be a payback/back off "message" hit after the hit on Favre, but it was just a guess.

That is a nice theory. I just wished the had actually hit him early and often. I thought the pass rush was a little soft. But, maybe that is what was intended - I wasn't in the meeting when the defensive game plan was introduced. |
