When asked
"If you could pick anyone to start your franchise, who would it be?" NFL Network talking heads Sapp - Mario Williams (not bad) Faulk - Merriman Dukes - Vick (to which Sapp said "Are you serious?") This morning the question goes around again. Some dude I've never heard of - Brady Faulk - Merriman Some other dude I've never heard of - Rodgers Pretty interesting. For me a year or two ago it would have been Brady followed closely by Manning, but if starting a franchise today I might have to agree with Sapp. |

Not sure why anyone starting a franchise would pick Brady or Manning (or Merriman for that matter). If I were starting a franchise, if I had to go QB I would go ARodg or Matt Ryan. However, my choice, if I were starting a franchise would be Joe Thomas. Get one rock solid stud for 10 years (barring injury) on that o-line right off the bat. Seems like a lot of young QBs get traumatized getting thrown into the fire with an expansion team.

Even somebody starting a franchise would be happy to resolve the most important position over the next 3-5 years. If you take Brady or Manning, you can take your time drafting and developing a quarterback slowly. I'd probably look at Ryan or Rodgers too, but since they've only done it for one year there's a little more uncertainty. Teams don't think more than 5 years down the road anymore; they can't, because 5 years from now they don't have jobs unless the team has done some winning in that time.
Selecting Merriman, a guy who coincidentally suffers a season-ending injury a year after being suspended for steroids, just shows that Faulk has no idea what he's doing. |

I would have to agree with CB, Joe Thomas would be one of my first choices. Him or Ryan Clady. Matt Ryan or Aaron Rodgers would also get heavy consideration.
If I was going to go with a defensive player, I wouldn't go with Mario Williams. Excellent player definitely, but I would look for a guy who could captain the defense, a MLB or a Safety. Patrick Willis would be my first choice at MLB, Troy Polamalu would be another choice (still only 28). Good leadership helps as much as anything. |

I think that's the obvious choice. The guy probably the best QB in the NFL... Matt Schaub at 75% is better than Aaron Rodgers at 130%. Those are facts my friends, Music City will back me up! |

Gerrad or collins.
Seriously though, I thought Rodgers was not going to make the "elite" status. Not sure who I would go with besides Rodgers or Ryan. I like Justin Tuck on D. |

Actually later in the show someone took Mike Tomlin and someone else took Bellicheat. No takers for GM's. |

It's almost endearing how you all band together. Too bad Packin06's thread, which could have been an interesting discussion, which pushed aside.

WTF are you talking about? The only person in this thread posting something off-topic is you, chickenboy.
I'll just start deleting your posts when they're off-topic from now on. |

Jamie Dukes further explained his reasoning (or lack there of) for Vick on his Blog.

Not shooting the messenger. 1. Which means nothing if you can't score. Here's ATL rank in scoring in 06, 05, 04, years in which Vick started and they indeed led the league in rushing. 25th, 14th, and 16th. Yippie you led the league in rushing though. 2. Really? Vick's combined TDs in 06, 05, 04 are 22, 21, 17. Not even close to leading in combined TDs. Example of Dukes not even looking at the data. 3. Atl's 3rd down conversion in 06, 05, 04 - 24th, 2nd, and 18th. Umm, sure Jamie. 4th down was 25th, 26th, and 10th. Not even close Jamie. 4. 18th, 18th, and 22nd in ToP. Hey Zeus man. 5. See above Dukes you idiot. |

Dukes forgot a few more bullet points in his blog:
6. Daily protests outside team facilities from the animal rights crowd. Nothing like an assload of controversy to build your new franchise around. 7. Very questionable football intelligence. No doubt, Vick has (or had? see #8) the ability to make things happen with his athleticism. He could abuse average and lower defenses seemingly at will. Upper echelon defenses always seemed to have an answer for Vick, however. Winning a championship would be a stretch, IMO, because you'll almost certainly run into an elite defense in the playoffs. 8. Does Vick have anything left? Possibly, but you don't build a franchise around uncertainty. 9. Jamie Dukes is an idot. |

Vick has an average arm at best. Make him beat you through the air, and he won't.
I'll take Rodgers any day. In fact I'll bet he makes big strides this year and looks like a young Peyton Manning by the end of the season. |

Change arm to head and we agree. Vick has/had a rocket arm...the problem is, he approaches the game like a video game. He tries to do too much with his legs. Never had to work on his touch or accuracy because he could get away with sandlot ball for the most part. |

How good his arm is has more than just how hard he throws. His accuracy stinks IMHO. So therefore his arm is just average. |
