So in three different games today, I saw post play unsportsmanlike conduct penalties called three different ways.

In one game the late hit, unsportsmanlike conduct penalty came after a first down on the play. The 15 yard penalty was assessed and the next play was first and 10.

In the Viking/Lion game a penalty was assessed for the player tossing the ball at the Viking defender, 15 yards and replay 3rd down.

In another game the penalty occurs after the play, the officials count the down and tack on the 15 yard penalty.

Explain, please.

if you get the first down and it is a dead ball foul on the offense, it is first and 10.

if you don't get the first down, if it's a dead ball foul on the offense, the down would count and the 15 yards would be marked off. if it occurred during the play then the down would be replayed.

i disagree with the rules, if you get a dead ball foul after a first down, i think it should be first and 25.

In you're 1st and 3rd examples we need to know who the penalty was on, the offense or the defense.

In the Lions game it was 2nd and 18. The penalty came after a 2 yard completion. The next play was 3rd and 31. They did not replay 3rd down.

I think it was on the offense in all 3 cases.

In the Lion/Viking game, I thought it occurred on 3rd down....because that was the play with all the confusion asa to whether or not the next play was 4th down or not.

Then it sounds like the penalties were all correctlly enforced after the play.

quote:
2-18-MIN 37 (12:31) (Shotgun) 8-J.Kitna pass short right to 84-S.McDonald to MIN 35 for 2 yards (92-J.Mitchell). PENALTY on DET-84-S.McDonald, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 15 yards, enforced at MIN 35.
3-31- (12:11) 8-J.Kitna pass short middle to 36-A.Cason to MIN 39 for 11 yards (41-C.Gordon).
