Packers sign Nall as backup QB

Press-Gazette

Apparently seeing the need for a third quarterback after starter Brett Favre sustained elbow and shoulder injuries in Thursday’s loss at Dallas, the Green Bay Packers today signed quarterback Craig Nall.

To make room for Nall on the 53-man roster, the Packers released safety Marviel Underwood.

General Manager Ted Thompson announced the moves in a statement issued by the team at 5 p.m.

Nall, the Packers’ fifth-round pick in the 2002 NFL draft, spent four seasons in Green Bay. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder played in six games in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, but was inactive in 2002 and 2005.

In 2004, Nall was 23-of-33 passing for 314 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions for the Packers, playing as Favre’s backup for the last 12 games. Almost all of that playing time came in mop-up duty in blowout losses to Tennessee and Philadelphia and a blowout win over Chicago.

Nall signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills before last season and has spent time with the Bills and the Houston Texans this season.

He will wear No. 16, as he did in his earlier stint with the Packers. He'll be the No. 3 quarterback behind Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

Another whipping boy for the forum. The guy will most likely never have to play and everyone feels the need to bash him. He did well as Favre's backup and should have been the number 2 and Pederson should have been the 3.

Too bad. I was sorta looking forward to Ruvell Martin running the WCO some day. Could be a Tom Matte clone. Razzer

Wasn't Nall a hunting buddy of Favre's during his last stint in GB? Maybe Brett is getting lonely on his off days.

Favre's flying solo: It's been a lonely camp for aging warrior

Last season, Craig Nall was there for hunting and Ryan Longwell for golfing.

Before them, guys like Doug Pederson and Billy Joe Tolliver were his sporting buddies. And before them, when his off-the-field activities were drinking and partying, Mark Chmura and Frank Winters were always up for a good time.

Ammo--You wouldn't have been too far away when they were down hunting in Cataract a few years ago.

Not too far, about 40 miles. Actually Matt Kenseth owns land in Crawford Co. and I think Favre has been there hunting too. They were both at a bar/resturant in De Soto one night.

I have no doubt Brett is happy to have Craig back. They got along well and I'm sure they will be hunting/hanging out in no time.

I like the move. We get a veteran QB that's already up to speed with the offense. He also gained quite a bit of game experience while he was gone. I'm sure he'll accept his role behind Rodgers much better than he did the last time he was here.

Cutting Underwood must mean Rouse will be ready against the Raiders. I sure would like to see him start ahead of Bigby.

He's probably busy helping Nall pack. It's a win-win - Nall gets to once again sit the bench and collect a check AND icon gets his basement back. Good day all around.

Remind me of one of those times he did well? I have nothing against him but there seems to some Tony Gwynn Jr.-like man crushes on the guy.

Last game against the Bears game a few years ago, he passed the lights out. Completed everything in sight.

Nall isn't that bad. When he's gotten onto the field he has done a really good job. If the Packers would have kept him the first time around they wouldn't have thrown that pick away on Ingle Martin.

Looks like he never even attempted a pass in his time in Buffalo. Had a hard time cracking a lineup of Kelly Holcomb and what was a rookie JP Losman.
