Hope for what?? He didn't part w/ big bucks for Woodson. Woodson received a decent contract. Same as Pickett. Why sign someone to big bucks when that hasn't been a proven formula to win??? Spending for the sake of spending is just plain stupid. |

Yeah, it was pretty stupid for the Packers to sign Reggie White back in 1993... That formula never produced a SB Championship or even a SB appearance... I heard that they paid some pretty big bucks (for the time) to get him in 1993. What a bust of a deal that was for the Packers....  |

I think a better way of putting is that it's unnecessary to sign a guy to a huge contract just for the sake of signing a big name. It has to be the right guy. If you're going to shell out big money like White got, it better be for a Reggie White caliber player. Guys like Nate Clements and Asante Samuel are big names (which is why they got snatched up quick) but that doesn't mean they are Reggie White caliber players.

Intelligent spending is the formula of winning franchises. Whether it is signing the greatest defensive player of all time, or fiscally responsible contracts like those of Pickett or Woodson. You didn't qualify it at the time. You clearly stated that signing someone for big bucks was not a proven formula for winning. Now when proven wrong, you find the need to change your tune and to attempt to demean the poster that proved you wrong. Fact is, Reggie White is the classic example of paying big bucks for a player and have it leading to winning the SB. Reggie White never produced for the Packers what he did for the Eagles. Reggie averaged over 15 sacks per season as an Eagle, only 11 as a Packer. The Packers signed Reggie when he was on the downside of his career - but he was absolutely one of the major factors of the Packers 2 SB runs in the 90's. Reggie White was a big buck signing that produced exactly what the Packers wanted - one of the top defenses (at the time) in the NFL and an NFL Championship. The first "big buck" FA signing in NFL history is a well documented (using your own words) "formula to win". Now continue to deny what is obvious. We wouldn't expect anything less from you. |

Why don't YOU produce an example of where this has worked. Show me where signing a bunch of big names to big fat contracts has actually produced a SB winner? I'm not talking about bringing in 1 good FA like Reggie White, I'm talking about bringing in 3 or 4 overpriced FAs which seems to be the new trend in the NFL. |

I love the Reggie White 'point.' It's a combination of a red herring and a straw man. It feels silly to even have to point this out, but for the eleventy-billionth time, there are no more Reggie Whites on the UFA market, and never will be again. Players at that level today (meaning first-ballot HOF'ers) would be Brady, Manning, Tomlinson, et al. No DL playing today even compares to White, FA or not.
What's basically happening is that teams are giving Reggie White-level $ in today's terms to guys who are basically at the level of Doug Evans or Ron Cox. I love when teams do that, because I know they'll continue to suck. |
