In an effort to provide some Packer discussion on a PACKER forum, here is an article that is fairly realistic about Rouse's chances of starting.

Rouse my man.
He should beat out Collins.

Yeah, but what has this got to do with the Packers. Can he play guard?

Rouse is big enough to guard the guard.

I was miffed we didn't draft a safety. I'm guessing TT feels the old grow from within philosophy applies with Rouse. I expect big things from this guy. What a unique physical specimen who can actually play.

The next Adrian Wilson.

I haven't been a big Collins supporter lately. I think I expected too much when he was drafted. I think I kind of half expected him to be the next LeRoy Butler, which is unfair I know, but he just hasn't done anything in 3 years. He's not an explosive hitter, he's not a ballhawk, and he doesn't sound that intelligent. I've never met him or talked to him so I'm just basing that on interviews though. If his position has to be the QB of the defense, I have some doubts Collins can be really effective.

Rouse on the other hand made some big tackles in the preseason and the season, grabbed a few INTs, and sounds halfway intelligent guy. I expect he'll be the starter on opening day.

I don't know what to expect, but I agree with your assessment of the Safety situation. There are no great safeties that aren't bright players. Collins has the physical tools, but as was questioned on the day he was drafted, his football smarts aren't there yet. Maybe the light goes on, maybe not. What I do know is that Rouse made plays when he was in there. More than Collins made all year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that one or both of them take it to the next level.

I don't think MM and TT have any doubts about Collins' football smarts. The fact that MM said that either Collins or Nick Barnett would be the defensive player to get the helmet with the radio in it tells me that they both expect Collins to be on the field a lot.

I like Rouse a lot, but he's still largely unproven. Collins is... steady. Not necessarily a playmaker, but he doesn't make a lot of mistakes, either. MM has referred to him as the leader of the secondary and considering the veteran presence we have there, that's saying a lot.

If he had better hands he could have had 10 interceptions last year. I'm ready to give him the benefit of the doubt for one more year. Assuming they keep all three, we could see Collins/Bigby on running downs and Collins/Rouse in passing situations. Both are pretty good combinations, IMO.

I don't see Collins getting the radio as a sign of confidence. Collins could be getting the helmet so the coaches can tell him where to line-up, what to look for and what calls to make. Someone like Leroy Butler could do that himself. Collins probably needs the most help in that regard and therefore would get the radio in the helmet. Nick Barnett can handle the front seven, but if he gets the radio, it's because Nick calls the plays in the huddle and the Packers wouldn't have to worry about anymore stupid Spygate signal stealing stuff.
