from profootballtalk.com (TT likes his injured RB's!)
CHRIS PERRY: ODD MAN OUT IN CINCINNATI? by Michael David Smith Two years ago, Bengals running back Chris Perry looked like the perfect fit to be the change-of-pace back for starter Rudi Johnson. He logged 61 carries for 279 yards as Johnson's backup in 2005 and, although he hadn't earned the starting job, he appeared to justify the 2004 first-round pick the Bengals spent on him. But Perry had knee and ankle surgery after the 2005 season, started the 2006 season on the physically unable to perform list, and broke his leg in November. Perry got just 10 carries last year, and Kenny Watson became the Bengals' No. 2 option at running back. Now Perry is expected to go back on the PUP list to start the 2007 season, and as Kevin Goheen writes in the Cincinnati Post, the Bengals are counting on second-round pick Kenny Irons to do what Perry hasn't: Spell Johnson and stay healthy. Quarterback Carson Palmer says of Irons, "[H]e's fast, he's quick, he's explosive -- he's all of the things you want to see." [Editor's note: And he's not on parole.] Palmer isn't the only one singing Irons' praises. Overall, the comments out of Cincinnati make it clear that the Bengals didn't draft Irons to have him sit on the bench. And as Ryan Wilson notes at the FanHouse, Irons will be the out-of-the-backfield pass-catching threat, while Johnson will be the between-the-tackles mauler. That doesn't leave much of a place for Perry. After just 73 carries, 337 yards, and zero touchdowns, the Bengals' 2004 first-round pick is looking like the odd man out. ---Man, I was upset when the Bengals nabbed Irons. Would love to see Perry get a shot in Green Bay if he truly is the odd man out. We could have a nice little influx of offensive talent with the addition of Robinson and Perry a few games into the season. |

I see Cybil makes no sense. Perry is coming off a broken leg in November.

Michigan is better than Northwestern. DUH!! That and a 4.6 YPC average is a little better than 3.2 YPC. |

You mean the same pedigree as Fergie? He can't help the Packers from the PUP list. |

No No No. And No again. This guy hasnt played more than a couple games at a time and cant stay healthy. Rumors out of Cincy is that he has dogged things a bit coming back from injury.

It does not appear that TT's M.O. is to try to improve his team with the castoffs of other teams. His M.O. is to stockpile young talent and let it develop; the vets he has added have been guys who were starters on their old teams for the most part........some injury plagued guy who's been jettisoned just doesn't seem like the direction he's interested in going.

Mabye, but he seems to have an affinity for guys who have talent but have been injured in the past...ala Charles Woodson... Justin Harrell and Brandon Jackson.
We reportedly flirted with many different veteran options. TT doesn't like those because they cost more than doing it the way you've stated he likes doing it. I'd sign the guy and give him a shot. He's a former first rounder trapped in a crowded backfield situation and has been hurt so if he's let go it isn't because he's not a talent. Now, I'm not saying he's going to be like Priest Holmes (who was also trapped in a numbers game) but he appears to be a better option than any we have right now. Some will scoff and preach Morency and Jackson. Chris Perry was a 1st round pick while Jackson and Morency were 3rd's, well Jackson wasn't quite a 3rd rounder...he was the 31st pick in the 2nd. That is the definition of pedigree. He was thought more highly of coming out than either Jackson or Morency. I'd love to have a veteran presence besides Morency in the backfield. To me... Herron is a NFL Europe guy as are the rest of our guys. Morency is someone I really like but he has the back concern. Who knows about Jackson? He was injured a ton in college. I'd prefer to throw my hat in the ring for a guy like Chris Perry who never really got a chance to show what he can do. Plus, I'm sure he'll be a low budget alternative to a proven veteran for the reasons listed previously. |

What kind of Bengal is he? No wonder they want to cut him. I mean, c'mon, go to at least one bar, drink lots of beer and drive home and, PRESTO, life time contract with the Bengals. |

LMAO I was thinking there had to be a mistake. The rate those players have been going, it seemed like it was a prerequiste to be on the team. Who was it, Collinsworth or Costas that said the Bengal's has a bail bondsman travel with the team? |

That stat is skewed. Perry had like 2 games with a 10.0 yd per carry avg. in which he only rushed a few times and got a couple big runs. Those 2 games juiced up his YPC. Take away those two games and his average is less than Herron's. That and Herron is younger and is healthier. |

I was not a big fan of his coming out of college, but what playing time he had his rookie season I was very impressed. No idea what they would want for him, but he would definitely be a player I would take a chance on.

You certainly never will. You may be worse than kworst. Blah, blah, blah Adrian Klemm, blah, blah, blah, Adrian Klemm, some stupid e-mail joke, blah, blah, blah Adrian Klemm. You're like a broken record. Of course a broken record may, on occasion, play something a person would want to hear. |

First, Klemm was not a "castoff". The Patriots wanted this guy back but he came to Green Bay for the money and a better opportunity to play. Second, Thompson wasn't looking at a lot of options when he signed Klemm. We needed some guys who could line up on opening day. Unfortunately, due partially to the ineptness of the previous GM, there was no such person on the roster so he did the best he could. Additionally, due partially to the ineptness of the previous GM, he didn't have a lot of salary cap flexibility to work with. And lastly, due partially to the ineptness of the previous GM, the starting guard was looking at an $11 million starting salary that even if Thompson had found a way to work around and restructure it would have handicapped the team for years, salary cap wise. So no, I don't think that this invalidates my point at all. Klemm was a good risk by a guy who didn't have a lot of options that just didn't work out. |
