I'm guessing we lost some cap room with the Jennings deal. Which is really an untenable situation regarding a bubble player.

Cap Impact

Signing Bonus: $11.25 mil

Base salarys:

09: $5 mil (guaranteed)
10: $1.85 mil
11: $2.7 mil
12: $3.885 mil

Average salary over length of contract: $6.6 mil (before incentives)

Jennings will have the opportunity to reach incentives, some of which are earned only if he is on the 45-man active roster on game day as well as $300k workout bonuses in '10,'11,'12.

Possible incentives:

10: $200 k
11: $1 mil
12: $1.25 mil

The deal leaves the Packers with about $21 million in remaining salary cap space for 2009.

Also have to keep in mind, I think 5 mil or so of this applies to the rookie cap, so essentially the available cap space is more like 15-16 mil.

What happens when Jennings gets cut before the season begins if he doesn't get off the bubble?

...cough...um, back to Greg, here's more on the Jerry Rice connection aptly recognized by Satori. I'm really starting to think Jennings might be wacky good this year...:

Jennings not resting on his laurels
On the heels of signing a fat new contract, one might think Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings would spend a little down time celebrating his good fortune.

Instead, Jennings has been training this week in Minnesota with other NFL receivers as well as Jerry Rice, perhaps the greatest wideout in league history.

The fact Jennings is rubbing shoulders with some big-name receivers should be an indication he doesn’t intend to get comfortable with his new-found wealth or rest on his laurels.

Jennings is part of an NFL receiving corps invited to the Twin Cities by Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

"Fitz called and told me the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) was going to be here," Jennings told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "Anytime you get an opportunity to work with a legend like that, you’ve got to take advantage of it. That was my main focus, trying to get here, to sponge off some of his knowledge that he can feed to us."

The Star Tribune reports that Fitzgerald wants the Twin Cities to become a popular destination for NFL players looking to stay in shape with intensive workouts before training camp begins. Fitzgerald, Rice and a group of players that included wide receivers Brandon Marshall (Denver Broncos), Jennings and Michael Clayton (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) worked out at the Gophers practice facility Wednesday.

Other players taking part included Arizona safety Antrel Rolle, Pittsburgh tight end Matt Spaeth, St. Louis linebacker James Laurinaitis and Arizona tight end Dominique Byrd.

Quarterbacks Tony Romo of Dallas and Joe Flacco of Baltimore are expected to arrive for workouts next week, while the Star Tribune says Buffalo Bills wide receiver Lee Evans and former Vikings receiver Cris Carter also are planning to visit.

"We’re the young guns, the young guys that are just coming up and making plays," Fitzgerald said. "I think this is a good group."

Rice, 46, remains in tip-top shape. He took part in all the conditioning drills and worked on route running with the receivers and offered his insight.

My parents talked to Greg Jennings yesterday at a signing he was doing in his (and my) hometown in Michigan. My mom asked him for a prediction for the season and he said, "Anything less than the Super Bowl is unacceptable."

Interesting that the signing was originally scheduled for Tuesday and got moved to yesterday...probably because of this event in MN.

Thanks for the report kramer.

I agree with Greg but I'll add something to it.

Anything less than a Super Bowl VICTORY is unacceptable.

Let me add one more thing. Anything less than a Super Bowl VICTORY in 2011 is unacceptable.

Too much uncertainty about 2011- uncapped year, owner lock- out, CBA strife....

Best we win the next one before that.

PS- Vegas has the Over/Under at 8.5 wins for GB in 09.

Agreed, but this team is in transition. Besides, I think TT will be ideally suited if there is a major change in the CBA. If the cap blows up, well it woun't change his modus operandi. If it shrinks, well, he can show cap room in a flash. I like our chances after this year.

Concur on being ideally suited; GB has prepped well for the long haul and has a war chest to rely on if/when the poop hits the CBA fan

In Transition ? Also agreed, the transition from a rebuilder to a real contender

10-6 is my guess, are we "betting" real Cedi or just a few pesewas ?

Big Grin
