He F'ed up and it cost them.
Sean Payton called a silly reverse w/ a pitch up by 3 w/ 2 minutes+ left in the game when he just needed to run it and P. Good coaches screw up too but often admit their errors IMO. The guy could easily have made it from 51 too. |

This makes no sense. Gibbs didn't lose the game. Kickers make 51 yard FGs all the time. In fact that kicker just made one, but it didn't count. Odds are he would have made it again. |

What odds are those? The same odds that show 50 yard FG's are missed more than they are made every year just like Sebass early this year? Next.... |

Sure, Gibbs made a mistake, but we'll never know if it cost them the game.

Elam's kick lifts Broncos for the second consecutive week
Associated Press DENVER -- The crowd groaned, the Raiders celebrated and Mike Shanahan smiled. The Denver Broncos coach may never have called a smarter timeout. Doug Pensinger / Getty Images Look familiar? Jason Elam does it again. Jason Elam's 23-yard field goal with 5:48 left in overtime gave the Broncos a 23-20 win over Oakland just minutes after the Raiders had exulted over what they thought was their own wild win. Sebastian Janikowski nailed a 52-yard field goal at 11:13 of overtime. But as the Raiders rushed the field in celebration and many of the Broncos hung their heads in defeat, referee Walt Anderson ruled that Denver had called a timeout just before the snap. On the retry, Janikowski's high-arcing kick hit the left upright, fluttering the flag atop the pole and giving the Broncos new life and the ball at their 42. They drove to the Oakland 6 and Elam nailed it on first down -- and the Raiders didn't bother calling their own timeout. "They stole it from us and we stole it right back," Elam said. "I feel bad," Broncos safety John Lynch said. "But not really." The Raiders (0-2) swore they never heard the whistle. I guess it was 52 yards...so it really doesn't count. |

Exactly, that's what I said in another thread. One big reason they lost the game is because they couldn't get a first down with under 2:00 to run out the clock. Buffalo was out of timeouts |

Of all the losses this season, this one was the most maddening. They had the lead, the ball, the clock and the momentum on their side and Payton pissed it away by trying to be clever by half. I'm sure he'll chalk it up to experience and learn from it, but it still sucks to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. |

i think free safety is right, they used to just not give you the time out instead of blowing the play dead and hitting you with a 15 yard penalty. that would be a neat trick to use if you could, on a last ditch drive with no time outs left, just call one anyway, have the ref blow the play dead and march off 15 yards but you can still get up to the line and spike the ball. |
