Did anyone see what sage old coaching veteran Joe Gibbs did yesterday? He screwed the pooch by calling back to back timeouts in an attempt to ice the kicker from making a game winning FG at the end of regulation.

There's a problem though ... you can't call back to back timeouts. The Redskins were penalized 15 yards, and it turned what would have been a 51 yard effort into a 36 yard effort. The kicker nails it ... Redskins lose the game 17-16. The kicker followed thru on the first attempt of 51 after the Gibbs T.O., and made it, so I guess he could have done it again. Still the extra 15 yards sure help make it a lot easier.

I couldn't help but laugh when he called the second timeout ... most of us probably know that's a penalty, but Joe Gibbs apperantly didn't.

He said he asked the ref and the ref if he could call two time-outs and the ref said ["yes"]. yeah, sure Joe....

.....but if the ref really DID say [yes] he must have meant [yes] you have two time-outs left.

Listen, Gibbs messed up and took responsibility for the loss. I think everyone should remember that he probably had about 10 hours of sleep all week owing to Sean Taylor's death and the resulting turmoil in the organization. Joe handled all that with considerable grace, and believe it or not, so did Daniel Snyder who for the first time in my memory set an example other team owners should emulate.

Didn't GB try to call a second straight timeout as Phildelphia was about to kick the winning field goal in the 2003 playoff? IIRC, GB was out of timeouts, so they were just denied it, not penalized.

Maybe I'd be more sympathetic if it wasn't another one of those "let's ice the kicker by calling a last-second timeout". "Then let's call ANOTHER ONE!"

That's how I felt .. couldn't help but laugh, because you know Gibbs was trying to use that stupid loophole. I feel bad for the organization and all of that ... the death of Taylor is a tough deal .. still it was an incredibly dumb decision by a hall of fame coach.

It is just in the last couple of years that it is considered a penalty.

Before they would just deny you and say "no you don't have any TOs left".

He was under 70 after all. BTW, is Gibbs under 70 years of age?

the redskins did have a timeout left. the penalty was for calling two in a row, not for calling one you don't have.

In the 1992 game against the Bengals, Favre tried to call two timeouts in a row. The refs merely told him he couldn't do it, and he quickly ran a broken play.

To imply that Joe Gibbs is a moron over a decision in a football game, is sophmoric and childish. G

ood point on Daniel Snyder. I was viewing pictures from the funeral and they put Mr. Snyder in more of a human light.

The unsportsmanlike penalty rule was put in place in 2005.

He said he [did not know] about the rule. Roll Eyes

In addition his D-cord/coach did not tell Gibbs about starting the 1st Defensive play w/only 10 players.

I was watching that game, figured they had it wrapped and thought what a nice tribute to Taylor, to win this game for him. Then Gibbs had a major senior moment (maybe he thought he could pull a Belicheck and say he didn't know it was against the rules) I just stood there and shook my head.

I felt for the players more than I did Gibbs. These guys were playing through some serious emotional issues and for their head coach to pull such a dumb stunt was very sad.

Anyone else hear how the Skins are playing (I think the bears in Chicago) this Thursday and even though the game could be rescheduled to this Sat and even have tv time, the NFL said "no" the game would proceed as scheduled. Talk about working on a short week.
