Atlanta Catching A Break?

It says he's considering it. Could be the best thing that's happened to this franchise in a long, long time.

At this stage I am not sure how much Parcells brings to the table, but whatever it is, is more than Atlanta has now.

I don't normally have a lot of sympathy for owners, but Branch got the big screwgie from Vick, and then Petrino. No excuse for Vick. Branch gave him his chance at stardom and millions. Vick screwed the pooch on that one. Maybe he is a dick and Petrino gave him what he deserved. At any rate the fans need something positive to come out of this. Parcells will be a short term solution, but he can help them get back to where they can be competitive.

And then he electrocuted it.

I would agree that Parcells is a short-term solution if they were bringing him on board in a HC/GM capacity. But they are talking about making an exec out of him. What would his involvement be in the rebuilding of the team? How much authority is the owner willing to give him, not only over players but over the hiring of coaching staff? And I'm sorry, but I'm having a real problem seeing a guy with Parcells' personality (read:mouth) in a front-office setting. Hopefully, just his rep will give some credibility to an organization that has less than zero.

I think that the reason Parcells is being considered for this job is because of the success of the Cowboys this year. Parcells essentially built the core of the Dallas team but for whatever reason couldn't bring it all together as a coach.

Probably the biggest reason that Blank is going after Parcells is that he may be the only guy who would have a chance to bring in a top quality GM and/or Head Coach. I imagine most other "up and comers" that are otherwise looking for new job won't touch the falcons right now for obvious reasons. Blank is simply buying PArcells contacts in the NFL and his credibility.

Bill Parcells, who once again has the desire to get back into the NFL, told the Daily News this morning he is on the verge of accepting a job to run the Atlanta Falcons football operation with only a few minor details to be worked out. A deal could be finalized today with Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

"I think I probably will do it," Parcells said by phone from his home in Saratoga. "The job description is to be the football operations overseer. We still have a little work to do, but I don't think it's anything major. I don't expect any real deal-breaker. I don't think there will be any major hangups."

Parcells said he definitely will not be the Falcons' head coach.

Parcells plans to hire a general manager and then work with the GM to hire a new coach to replace Bobby Petrino, who quit last week 13 games into his first season to coach at Arkansas. Parcells has candidates in mind for each job, but didn't want to reveal their names. He thought current team president and GM Rich McKay would stay with the team to handle league business.

"I expect to speak to the Falcons today. It might be in person, but it won't be in Atlanta," Parcells said. "We have spoken about what the structure will be. We have some things to talk about. I will say this, I don't think it's anything real major."

Parcells sounded extremely upbeat. His agent was with him in Saratoga, an indication a deal is about to happen. He said Blank is a "nice man, a real nice man."

Parcells, who retired from coaching when he left the Cowboys after the 2006 season, has been working for ESPN this season.

"I'm going to oversee the football operation, Parcells said. "I'm going to hire a general manager if the deal is finalized in Atlanta. We are going to hire a coach and talk to all the coaches who are there. It's going to be a collective effort. The triangle is going to be the GM, the coach and Bill Parcells. I'm also going to include Rich McKay if he wants to stay in the business.

"Under no circumstances is Bill Parcells ever going to return to the field."

The Falcons, 3-11 in a nightmare season, are in desperate need of the instant credibility Parcells would bring after the Michael Vick and Petrino fiascos. Blank first asked Parcells if he was interested in coaching, but Parcells said no. He left the Cowboys last January after four years. He made the playoffs twice in Dallas, but did not win a postseason game.

Parcells is also the former coach of the Giants, Patriots and Jets. He was also the Jets GM and, although he didn't have the title, he was in essence the GM of the Cowboys. The Falcons reached out to former Steelers coach Bill Cowher last week but he was not interested.

This is not the first time the careers of McKay and Parcells crossed. Following the 2001 season, McKay was with the Bucs when Parcells nearly took a job as head coach. He was going to bring along Mike Tannenbaum, now the Jets GM, as his general manager to replace McKay. Tannenbaum is no longer available.

The Dolphins have also expressed interest in Parcells, but with owner Wayne Huizenga considering a sale of the team, that situation is unsettled.

But, but jerra was the thin-ankled mastermind behind the Cowboys' roster, right?

He might if he takes the job in Miami that he's rumored to be talking to Wayne about.

It sounds maybe like Arthur Blank reconsidered as opposed to Bill turning them down...

Very curious.

The way I'm hearing it is that Blank and Parcells had "agreed in principle" last night, and Blank believed it was a done deal.

When Blank contacted Parcells to finalize it this morning, the Dolphins had swooped in with an (supposedly better) offer.

Blank then pulled his.

Sound at least a little bit familiar?

I don't think Parcells really wanted the ATL job. I think he used it to boost the MIA offer. Sound familiar?

If I was Blank I would proceed with caution. This guy has a habit of "retiring" right in the middle of getting a team rolling. Besides what has Parcells really done as a personel guy?

Yawn. Parcells hasn't exactly been Vince Lombardi the past decade or so.

Why don't these teams do a little homework and find a top personnel guy who might actually stick around for more than 3 or 4 years? Those guys are out there.

Ditka and Parcells are two of my all-time favorite NFL personalities. There's isn't much that won't come out of their mouths given the right set of circumstances. Good stuff.

The Falcons are/have really experienced a nose-dive, spiralling out of control. The local media here is implying Rich McKay is now done with the Falcons, and will be moving on after this season.
Also much grumbling/whining from players. DeAngelo Hall doesn't think he should have to 'prove' himself to a new coach. ROFL2
I'll try not to cry myself to sleep tonight.
