Thanks for the blast from the past. Makes you realize just how dramatic this turnaround has been.

Reading the reader comments was interesting. Can people project into the future?

"It is the youngest team in the league, but...", but NOTHING! The team was having growing pains. As much as I did not want TT to hire MM, by week 3 or 4 I was quite impressed by him and the work he was doing.

Packers fans are a spoiled impatient bunch.

It also shows that he has had a pretty clear vision about how to get it turned around. I could not be more impressed with MM. Having a vision, putting it into action, not swaying from your vision and then it working is quite the accomplishment. clap1

Yeah, the Jets and Patriots debacles were a low point. The Bear and Cowboy losses this year weren't fun, but in the first we had to work hard to give them the game and in the second it was obvious our key injuries impacted the game...

That Jets game is where they truly hit rock bottom. I think a lot of us at that point didn't have a lot of faith in what McCarthy was doing. Luckily the team responded right after that, and started to figure out how to win games.

McCarthy has done a great job .. no longer do I feel like the Packers are going to show up flat to play an inferior opponent. They basically seem to be a professionally minded team that knows how to take care of their business .. be it at home, or on the road.

Funny you should say that.

I also was not completely sold on McCarthy. I did not think his coaching pedigree was all that great, and I thought he looked completely lost as a coach at times last year. Fortunately, he stuck to his guns and the Packers are the beneficiary.

I did not like the hire. I was completely wrong.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about football the way McCarthy does. It's like poetry. As long as he stays away from mission statements, etc.

Oops, schizophrenic, Goalline. I also wrote this last year:

On October 23rd:

Hey,

I have been shocked at the level he has coached. He has been MUCH better than I expected.

Go get that 7-9 record, MM.

I went back again. I was all over the place with this guy, one of the spoiled fans. I was impressed early and really down on him after the Jets game. Ah well. Thanks Point Brew.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but my 9 year-old daughter is responsible.

Last December, after the Jets game, she put up green and gold stars on our TV, just above the screen(green, gold, green, gold).

Since then, the Packers have played 18 regular-season games and have won 16 of them(16-2).

She'll be checking this thread to note your appreciation and congratulations to her!

Oh yeah .. the mission statment. When I first read it I thought we were in deep trouble. "Attack the Voyage" had me rolling.

Mike McCarthy's Mission Statment

Upon accepting the Green Bay Packers' head coaching position, Mike McCarthy issued the following mission statement:

THE FOUNDATION FOR THE NEW DIRECTION OF THE GREEN BAY PACKERS WILL BE CONSTRUCTED WITH THREE KEY COMPONENTS OF OBTAINING "PACKER PEOPLE," CREATING "STABLE STRUCTURE" AND CONCENTRATING ON "CHARACTER AND CHEMISTRY."

A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT WILL BE CREATED WITH "LEADERSHIP" THAT KEEPS ITS EYE ON THE TARGET OF ESTABLISHING A CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TEAM.

THE DIRECTION WILL BE FUELED WITH CONSTANT COMMUNICATION TO ENSURE EVERYONE IS ON BOARD. WE WILL ATTACK THE VOYAGE WITH ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM TO OVERCOME THE OBSTACLES THAT WE WILL ENCOUNTER.

THIS VISION IS ENHANCED WITH RESOURCES AND TRADITION THAT STANDS IN THE FOREFRONT OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS.

I AM HONORED AND PRIVILEGED FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD THE GREEN BAY PACKERS ON A NEW JOURNEY BACK TO THE PINNACLE THAT BEARS THE NAME OF "COACH LOMBARDI."

Imagine how we'd be doing if she would have used glue and glitter to spell out "Favre" and "Driver" along the sides! Seriously tho, any bit of voodoo majic that works is fine by me.

Matt Foley (Chris Farley) would have been the perfect one to read that mission statement to get the Packers "back on track!"

Count me in with those crow-eaters who read that and with cold chills running down their spines, thought, "YIKES! Eeker mfhide What kind of IDOT did we hire and for the love of all that's decent, WHY???" pullhair rant --and now see the move as a work of genius, (We're-not-worthy bow here. worthy ) and now realize that when he missed the English Composition line, he was standing in the football line twice.

I've said this before, but I'm tired of people attacking that mission statement. Granted, the typos were disturbing (and I tend to be overly picky about typos). But there's really nothing wrong with the statement. It's an honest statement of what he wanted to do, and what he has done so far.

McCarthy's mission statement may not have risen to the level of poetry or a literary essay, but it came from the heart.

He succinctly and honestly summarized his plan for rebuilding and leading the team, misplaced metaphors and all. And it reflects his esteem for the Green Bay Packer organization and its tradition.

So the statement isn't a Shakespeare sonnet. The Bard never won a NFL division title or made the playoffs.
