How good is Ryan Grant? We should all find out this season whether or not it was a mistake for GM Ted Thompson to commit a long-term deal to Grant before the '08 season after what was then a little over a half-season of production in '07. Grant's overall numbers last season seem adequate at first glance (1,203 yards, eighth in NFL), but he has admitted this summer that he expects more than a sub-4.0 yard per carry average and four rushing TDs. If injuries hamper Grant's effectiveness as it did at times last year, Brandon Jackson proves to be a decent sub but certainly no game-breaker to keep the heat off QB Aaron Rodgers. While part of the Packers' running issues were hampered by a banged-up O-line, the group could use a few more insurance legs.

Not exactly shocking GB is ranked this low. Maybe it's me, but those 1200+ rushing yards didn't seem like, well, 1200+ rushing yards last year I dunno

Grant was subpar last year despite those 1200 yards. He made very little impact in the ground game, and wasn't much of a factor in the receiving game either. I realize he was injured to begin the season, but he never really did come around and show the things he showed in '07.

A lot more will be expected of him this year. If he gets off to a slow start I'd like to see them make a change.

I may have stated this before.

If you go back and watch any game from last year, I lost count how many times Grant was just about to break out of a hole, get deep into the secondary, only to have somebody "shoestring tackle" him. He seemed to have lost a half or 1/3 of a step most likely due to the hammy injury early in TC.

I have a feeling this year is going to be different for Grant.

Saw it literally 15 times. Hopefully your theory is correct---that 1200 yards would have been 1500 by breaking those.

Not to mention how many times he missed the cutback lane.

That and a whopping 4 rushing TD's were hardly alot to get hyped over. Pack needs some long, grinding drives via the run to eat up clock and keep the D fresh. We didn't do much of that in '08.

I also think that Jackson will finally be ready for a bigger load. He showed some real signs last year, but was still inconsistant. I think we'll finall see some real production from Jackson this year, and that might make Grant more productive in less touches.

You have to believe defenses will respect Rodgers more this time around as well.

Being healthy, and having NFL defenses fearing ARod should improve Grant's productivity.

And may I comment how far we've come as a franchise in just the last 10-15 years or so. Back in the early 90's, if you'd told me our starting RB would "only" be getting 1,200 yards rushing, I'd have been overjoyed. It's a testament to this team's consistency and success that we expect much more now.

1,500 yards for Grant if his legs are at full strength.

Dare I say..."mark it down??" Big Grin

I think defenses started to respect Rodgers more about midway through last season, Grant's numbers improved because of that since he remained just as sluggish and his vision seemed to remain poor through week 17. I really hope Grant can return to his 2007 form in '09, we'll probably have an offense that has a chance to lead the league in scoring if that happens.

Seems fair given Grant's production last year. Still, Grant - and probably Hawk - looked like different players to me last year vs. '07. I find it hard to believe that two young, talented guys suddenly tanked and it wasn't largely a result of lingering injuries.

Grant couldn't seem to break away. Hawk lacked lateral quickness and a burst IMO. My guess is they'll both be fine if healthy. I expect both to have big years.

Which was approximately 180 degrees from '07 when he played with excellent vision (as well as a good burst). He simply has to break those shoestring tackles this year.

We'll find out this year if we signed the '07 or '08 versions of Grant (or somewhere in the middle) and go from there. I expect him to be better, and would be pleased with a ypc in the 4.4 neighborhood (if he touches 5 ypc again over an entire season we're going to have an excellent year).

However, if he's right at or under 4 YPC again he may not even have a roster spot in '10 let alone the starting job.

I agree with Coach.

If the 2008 Grant surfaces, TT will draft the best RB in the first round and Ryan will be cut or traded.

Ah, the new "need" drafting TT.

I don't think the fact that our Tackles were inconsistent the whole year helped Grant's cause much. Clifton was up and down, as was Tauscher before blowing out his knee and being replaced by Tony Moll.

You can count the number of undrafted running backs who went on to become upper-echelon NFL players on one hand. Grant looked like an exception to the rule in 2007; not so much in 2008. I think we'll get a definitive answer this season.
