Game notes
Wide receiver Donald Driver was not present, and the Wisconsin State Journal reported on its Web site his absence is related to a desire to renegotiate his contract.

The Packers have been more than fair with Driver over the years. I wouldn't give him another penny.

Unfortunately for Driver, wrong side of 30 and plays in the deepest position on the team. A healthy James Jones, who is reported to be in outstanding shape and worked his butt off in the off-season, could be a guy who just steps up and takes the #2 spot regardless. Plus you have Jordy Nelson entering his second year and Martin, Rodgers best bud.

Love what the guy did as a 7th round pick for GB. But it's all about what have you done for me lately that is the NFL.

How much does he expect GB to give a 34 year old WR with this kind of youth/"tallant" breathing down his neck?

He's under contract, and I seem to recall the Packers already sweetened his current deal within the last couple of years.

Wake me up when he starts skipping mandatory practices.

If it wasn't him it would be somebody else. It happens every single year (somebody isn't happy with his current contract situation).

I'm glad Tramon got a little sweetener for his deal. Jennings remains the top priority and some of the others are just going to have to wait their turn (or just deal with it).

Agreed ... he should get no boost in pay. He's been rewarded well for his service to the Packers, and I believe he's already received two increases in recent years. No more.

By the way .. Driver gets 6.1 mil this year, and over 7 mil next year. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/46411362.html

I enjoy Don's play. He's a tough, smallguy. but his pay is more that sufficent for his play. Don tell your agent to "get real".

Not really. It is about what you are going to give me. That's why 1st round picks receive those ridiculous contracts.

Here's what Driver's agent sez:

"Donald is training in Texas and the Packers know this," agent Jordan Woy said, in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "It is not a mandatory camp."

The Packers extend the same courtesy to Charles Woodson, in that they do not expect him to attend non-mandatory activities, they trust him to work out on his own. If Driver skips any mandatory activities, then I'll start getting concerned.

He wouldn't be the first aging veteran who, if he hits the free agency market, discovers that he is already being paid at or above the market.

Not a story for either of these guys. They both are consummate professionals.
Even if Kampy is not 100% excited about the switch, he's doing exactly what he needs to be doing.
I have a hard time believing DD is looking to renegotiate. There's nothing in his agent's quote that says so either.

Meanwhile, two NFL sources said -- and a team source confirmed -- that Driver was absent because he wants the team to sweeten his contract. Driver, 34, has two years remaining on his contract, which calls for a $3.9 million base salary this season and a $4 million base salary in 2010. This is the fourth straight year that Driver has approached the team about reworking his deal, the team source said.

An email to Driver's agent, Jordan Woy, was not immediately returned. Attempts to reach Driver have so far been unsuccessful.

McCarthy wouldn't address the specifics of the absence of any of the three non-injured veterans -- Driver, cornerback Charles Woodson and safety Nick Collins -- but did acknowledge that "business" is involved.

If DD holds out for more money (which I don't ever see happening)...after what I went through with Favre going from one of my favorites to an absolute pariah...I'm going to shoot myself.

Next thing you know, a story will come out in the MJS that Robin Yount didn't stay in Milwaukee because of his loyalty to the city and Brewers franchise, but because Bud Selig had pictures of him doing naughty things during the Sausage Races.

Why do so many teams want Packers who are getting a little long in the tooth?

Driver, after having his contract reworked in '06 and '07, is due to make $6.1 million this season and $7 million in 2010, the final year of his contract, between base salary and bonuses.

Driver's average salary per year ($6.6 million) for the length of his existing contract ranks second on the team, behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers ($12.7 million) and ahead of linebacker Nick Barnett ($6.57 million).

Last season, Driver, 34, posted his lowest number of catches (74) and yards (1,012) since the '03 season. He also likely knows Jennings is in line for a contract that will exceed his.

Any prolonged absence could put Driver's $207,280 roster bonus in jeopardy.

In an e-mail, Driver's agent, Jordan Woy, said Driver's contract is not at issue.

According to PFT, it isn't about the amount of his money, it could be about the structure of it. They say he isn't guarenteed any of it. So if they want to go a different direction they could with no cap hit. So, in effect, Driver is trying to give himnself some leverage.

Of course, they also indicate that by staying away, they are giving others the opportunity to show he can be replaced.

1) Inside player scouting reports.
2) Those teams remember when a Packer had a career day against their team.
3) Players from America's best team should be in demand.
4) They actually believe the player in question still has something left.
5) They might help mentor their younger players.

Take your pick.

Stay healthy through TC, play in the opener and his $3.9 million base salary for this season becomes guaranteed.

Worn down Packers look better than anything they have on their own roster? I see the Patriots just signed Paris Lenon.
