Ruvell Martin
Ruvell Martin... Daryl Johnston think's you da man!

Was I dreaming Sunday during the Packers-Rams game??

Daryl Johnston, one of my absolute favorite color commentators, was just fawning over Ruvell Martin. While talking about the Packers receiving corps, he mentioned something about how great Driver and Jennings were, and how Jones is a definate up and commer (he loved their yards after the catch). He referred also to KRob getting another shot, and giving them some really good depth.

But then he proceeded to really give Martin some air time. He said Martin is really impressive, that before long, he had a chance at being a big time receiver in Green Bay. He loves his size, said he has great speed, and has great hands. He also loves his instincts and route running.

Did I drift off to someplace far away, or was our #5 receiver being called a star in the making? I mean, DJ went back and talked about him a good 2 or 3 times.

To quote Hannibal Lector (and I always try to bust out a little 'Silence of the Lambs', or 'Hannibal' when I can...)

If so, goody goody.

To think that just a year ago, we were worried about our receivers. Wow, what a difference a year can make.

I agree. I love Martin's upside potential. Driver is in his prime, and has a few more good years left. Jennings is the homerun threat, but I think both Jones and KRob have deep play capabilities.

Martin just looks like he could put the hurt on somebody.

K-Rob is signed through next year...but, I would venture that TT will try and rework that or try to sign him for 2-3 years and give him a new contract at some point. I think he still has a lot of upside. I don't think TT will let him get away without at least trying to extend him.

No, I agree. I think KRob will be here a few years. He won't command big bucks in the market--yet, and I think he was pretty impressed that #4 called and checked on him when he couldn't come and work out with the team. Plus, you've gotta think that this is where he could really have a chance at getting a ring.

Ruvell will have time to watch some really good receivers (and a great on in DD), and learn to perfect the position.

God, I'm excited. This will end up being the best group Brett's ever had to throw to.

this WR corps is so good that they had to cut a STAR in the making in Ferguson prior to the start of the season. Simply incredible

That is correct. I believe Martin is restricted and the Packers would get compensation if he goes elsewhere.

Don't forget Carlyle Holiday's on IR. I think he's a player. May not be with us, but he seems to have awareness out there, and he can catch the ball.

I love Martin and hope they keep him but I'm not sure Moose got the speed thing right. I thought lack of speed was the rip on him.

TT is going to reep the rewards of how good alot of the young guys on the packers are. He is a great gm with a keen eye for talent.

Typical color guy stuff: take a fairly obscure player and pretend you have the inside "scoop". If he were really that good, he'd be up the depth chart. Martin's just a guy. He's quality for a #5, but likely tops out as a decent #3. It's fun to root for him, but I just highly doubt he turns in to anything special.

The best thing about Martin is that he continues to improve. He finished '06 w/ a big game I think and built on that. Jones/KRob have cut into his #'s but he's also a guy that has drawn some big PI calls downfield.

Agreed w/ Herschel it's part DJohnston fluff but I give the guy credit for proving himself as a legit NFL player. He's a great 5th for a team w/ no bigs and probably a below par 3rd.

I'd be surprised if GB didn't tender him for right of first refusal next year given he is really their only size mismatch at WR. I'm not convinced CHoliday will ever play for GB again; his knee was degenerative as I understood it.

Either way it's tough to argue GB can get good matchups at WR 5-deep which is nice.

Martin's the real deal. He makes it look easy. Just like Jones and Jennings and Robinson in front of him.

Any other team, or any other year on this team, he'd be in the rotation.

So the number two receiver on a pathetic WR corps has all of nine more catches and two fewer TD's than a number five receiver on perhaps the best WR group in the league? Touche. The fact that some even consider this a reasonable debate is a testament to how far the overall t
