Our little community of 450,000 here in Fresno, California is in celebration mode over the Fresno State BullDogs National Championship in the College World Series. No one in their right mind predicted this and I certainly did not either.
But, you have to love this team that survived 6 elimination games in the process of winning the National Championship. The hero was a different guy every night and they truly won as a team. The pitching staff was hurting, the key players were playing with injuries (third baseman had four dislocated fingers, the hero of tonight's game was playing with a complete ligament tear in his left thumb, the star pitcher was on the disabled list), and still they managed to win by playing as a team. Scrub pitchers we had not used in a month saved games. Scrub pitchers with ERA's over 6 and 7 pitched well enough to let Fresno state's hot bats win it. The manager made all the right moves in juggling a depleted pitching staff. It was really incredible. Wow... a season record of 33-27...and now National Champs. Thanks for the amazing ride Fresno State. Mrs. CAL has bragging rights cause her alma mater has a championship (in our lives) and mine (CAL) is still waiting. Of course, she has bragging rights over me in pretty much everything anyways. |

Hey CB,
Congrats to the Bulldogs for a great Tourney and Cinderella Story. Just still don't think it's right to hear a pinnnnggggg instead of the crack of the bat though. Nonetheless, congrats, its great to see a story like that and have the National Championship decided on the field. Listening to ESPNradio, they said FSU only got into the CWS because of the obligatory conference championship, and equated it to a #15 seed in the Bball tourney winning it all. |

GBIdaho,
What in the world are you doing in Singapore? Beautiful country... Yes, you are right. Fresno State ONLY got into the NCAA tourney because they won the WAC tournament at the end of the year. It's equivalent to a NFL team that went 8-8 in the regular season winning the Super Bowl. The last time an underdog team won like this...was well... Boise against Oklahoma. This team was a team that anyone could love. The guys just believed in themselves and each other after they beat Arizona State (a team that was 34-3 at home I believe) in the Regionals in their field. The startling thing is that they DOMINATED each team in the Series. Even their one loss to Georgia was a fluke. Fresno State's closer Brandon Burke was tired and had nothing but fumes when he relieved in the eighth inning in the first game. He is normally a ground ball pitcher and he gave up some shots including Beckham's two-run homer. That was only the second home run he had allowed ALL SEASON. You just don't lose a 4 run lead in the eighth inning too often with your closer on the mound. This team was a pleasure to watch and even got me interested in the CWS... something I have hardly ever watched before. |

Way to pimp that team AFTER they've won!
If Georgia had won, we'd have never heard a peep from you. |

Nice win, the CBWS is always fun.
Which team was the underdog? |

Neither. The way it worked out, whichever team won was gonna set the record for most losses by a CWS champion. I was kinda cheering for Georgia, but FSU played tough the entire tourney. Hard to root against them. |

When I saw the subject of this thread I was worried that Mike Vick had somehow gotten back on the street and that his land was open for business again.

Way to go, CalBuc! Very exciting news for everyone in the San Joaquin Valley. Is this not Fresno State's first national championship?
They truly played like a team, and I love it when a team like that wins any championship... |

I think CalBuc just posted because he wants everyone to think he is really into the teams he follows. I think Calbuc is a borderline fan who, if not for the internet, wouldn't even know his teams mascots let alone his teams comings and goings. |

Give the guy a break folks, CB is pro-Fresno State just about anything. This is not a bandwagon thing, you should all know him better given the Fresno State - Boise State smack we've talked on this Forum for years.
CB, I'm in Singapore due to a job promotion, and a large project/Joint Venture between two U.S. semiconductor companies. |
