Interesting news out of Da Bears:
Bears | Berrian turns down $25 million offer Thu, 28 Feb 2008 05:50:22 -0800 Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears WR Bernard Berrian, who is soon to be an unrestricted free agent, was offered a five-year deal from the Bears worth $25 million. The deal included $8 million in the form of a signing bonus. Berrian, however, turned the proposal down and will test the free-agent water. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Either he's pissed at the Bears or he feels he can get even more $ or both. Berrian's a decent WR and you know some team is going to overpay for him. Still, 8 mil guarenteed was pretty good for a WR who hasn't cracked 1000 yards in his career. |

He wants to play for a team with an actual NFL quarterback, thus the bears and vikings are out of the running

Things I have heard are pretty much to that effect...that it's not about money as much as it is getting around a real offense. Don't be surprised if he signs for less with a better offensive team. |

Too bad the bears don't need a QB or a WR to beat the pack

Yeah, you're right. All we need to do is show up.

Berrian wants to play close to home in Oakland or San Francisco. But he also wants a good QB. Not sure where he ends up.

So who do the Bears have at WR now? They cut Muhammed.
They have Hester, Mark Bradley, and that Arena League guy who's name escapes me (Rashad Davis?). Just a guess, but I bet all of their WRs combined barely have 100 career receptions. They are THIN at WR if Berrian doesn't return. They have below average QBs, WRs, and Oline. I'd say their RBs are average to below average. But they have great TEs!! Ain't no stoppin them now! |

Berrian should do better on the open market. The Eagles gave Kevin Curtis $31 million and $9 million guaranteed last offseason.

yeah the Bears look to be crumbling a bit. Losing Muhammed, Berrian and Briggs
while staying pat with Grossman and Benson , they dont look to be improving. |

The Bears should give Mike Hass a shot. Heck, I thought he should have seen some regular playing time at the end of last year instead of running big-money stiff Muhammad out there to drop 3 passes every game.

Berrian is going to get major dough while being just a "good" receiver, IMO. I really can't remember much excitement out of the guy. I guess that could be because of the offense he is playing. Anyway, I really would rather have all the Packs guys (DD, Jennings, KRob, JJ and Martin) over him. And not just because of the price tag.
Maybe I'm off base and BB is that good... |

Agreed. Even if the guy wanted to stay he had to test the market - which I'm sure he'll find much more lucrative. In these days if you can be the best/one of the best available at any given position you're virtually guaranteed a huge overpayday. |

Man, these losers on KFAN have a huge stiffy for Berrian hoping the Vikings sign him. Seriously, WTF? You still would have T-Joke as your QB. WOuldn't you be better off trading for Derek Anderson and giving him money than a stiff like Berrian? Berrian sucks. I'd take just about every WR on the Packers ahead of him.

The funny thing is, Berrian has said all along that the Bears' revolving door at QB played a major factor in his decision--Yet he's likely going to the bastion of QB-ing stability that is Minnesota. At least Grossman threw an accurate deep ball--the one route Berrian excelled at.
It's certainly all about the money and, if the speculative reports are correct, with his new deal he'd become one of the top 2 or 3 highest paid wide-receivers in the league. Not bad for a deep threat who's never caught more than 70 balls or 1,000 yards in a season. B-N-D |

LOL at the Vikings!! A rumored 16 million dollar signing bonus for Benard Berrian!!
He's been a starter for 2 seasons and in those 2 seasons he has averaged 61 catches, 863 yards and 5.5 touchdowns. Maybe, just maybe, one could make the arguement that he is one of the 25 best recievers in the league. But now he will be paid like a top 5 player at his position. Last year was Berrian's best year and he finished tied for 20th in the NFL in catches, 22nd in receiving yards and tied for 29th in receiving touchdowns (rankings among wide receivers, does not include tight ends or running backs). 42 million, 16 million in a signing bonus, LOL at the Vikings. That being said, the Bears are now totally screwed at the wide receiver position. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they ended up with the worst bunch of wide receivers in the NFL for the 2008 season. |

In other words, $76 million in paper/contract money for the immortal Madieu Williams and the great Bernard Berrian, with no decent QB to even get him the ball.
I'm so glad these clowns are in GB's division. |

Angelo has just officially entered the "trade down" mode in next month's draft.

Maybe. A bit too early to tell right now with free-agency just over a day old, and the draft still over a month away. I wanted to keep Berrian, but certainly not for that price. Guys like DJ Hackett and Bryant Johnson are still available, and I'm not so sure they're not superior receivers. Either one could be just as productive as Berrian and come at a substantial savings. Maybe I'm a homer, but I actually like the potential of our young receivers, too (Bradley, Hass, Hester). B-N-D |
