RIP .. Mr. Collins. Hopefully in time Nick Collins will be able to get his focus back on football. He's got a tough learning curve ahead of him with this switch to the 3-4.

Here's a worthless comment from an idiot "fan":
walt189 » Thursday May 28, 2009 9:53 AM It's terrible to lose a father like that but it was 12 days ago, time to get back to practice, if only for a distraction. I don't expect him to be BF and come back the next day but when my dad died I was back at work the next Monday, and I don't make three million dollars. |

I'll be taking a week off of work if anyone in my immediate family dies.
"Douche-Bag" doesn't begin to describe "walt189" All my best to the Collins family |

I couldn't take a week off even if I died.
12 days does seem like a bit much if the death was not unexpected. JMO IMHO IMO |

This is a sad time for Collins and his family. That said, it is entirely possible that Nick remains away from the Packers facility because of his desire for a new contract.

Perhaps Nick was in charge of taking care of the estate, getting everything in order. That takes more than a few days.

Collins speaks
He hints at a training camp holdout if no progress is made on a new contract, and was combative with reporters in a Q&A session. |

If he holds out in TC, he's going to be giving back some of the $3 Mil he was scheduled to earn this year, and if he struggles in the new scheme because of it he'll be hurting his contract prospects for next season.
It's the only leverage he has, but since he's already sent the message that he isn't happy by skipping most of the voluntary portions of OTA's (and it hasn't yet made the team open negotiations) I'm not sure why he or his agent think it'll be any different if he begins skipping mandatory practices. He's under contract, and he should fully participate in mandatory practices. If he chooses not to, the team should fine his behind. The Packers knows he has to show up eventually because he doesn't want to not get credit for the service year which would further delay his FA and his chances for the contract he believes he deserves (with or without a new CBA). If he does hold out in TC (and possibly into the season), the one who will be hurt the most by it is Nick Collins. |

I've made that same point in my posts and told I was a fool. New boss (Capers), new methods (the new D), you're in a contract year and you're gonna cut your odds of doing well? Play like you did last year, and TT will be hauling Brinks trucks to your front door.
The whole strategy belies a lack of confidence in the player's ability, as if Nick and his agent know last year was a fluke and that he needs to get the money NOW before the Pack discovers he's not the All Pro others think he is. Somehow, I don't think a poker player like TT will blink. |

Don't re-write history, nobody called you a fool.
You called Collins' agent a FOOL (which I disagreed with then and I disagree with now). They apparently think it's the way to get the Packers to the bargaining table (and it doesn't appear to be working). Skipping voluntary OTA's is also different from skipping mandatory MC practices and TC. If it extends that far, then I would agree Collins is making a mistake. Agree about TT not blinking. |

If it belies a lack of confidence, then there are an awful lot of successful players that lack confidence, including Barry Sanders. Pl;ayers hold out when they want to use what they perceive as leverage against the team to get a better deal. It's par for the course in the professional world.

With regard to "confidence", think of it this way
If Nick and his agent felt that they were going to have another good/great year, then waiting and performing is the best move because the salaries just keep rising. ( See Jennings, Greg) If you feel that a Pro Bowl appearance and a bunch of INTs returned for TDs is the apex of your performance over the next 12-24 months, then you play hardball now; before your performance drops off. Which one did Nick and his agent choose ? |

true, but you could also blow out a knee in TC. I can see a football players reasoning to get the money in hand as soon as possible.

Humor aside, the real issue is the elephant (compared to $3 mil) dollars that Collins wants.
If he get's hurt during the regular season he'll earn his $3 mil that no matter what. I'm sure he could take out an insurance policy to cover all or most of what he's scheduled to earn this year, but he's hunting bigger game and I don't believe there is an insurance company in the world that would write a policy covering him for the 17-23 mil he could potentially lose on his next contract (whether it's this year or next year). He's playing hardball because he doesn't want to risk it, and I understand that (although since he's under contract I don't agree with it). |

Except for Ryan Grant (which I chalk up to him being discombulated/distracted by the TOG drama), TT doesn't reward that. He rewards the players who put team first, work hard to continue to excel within whatever system his coaches have installed and have at least a superficial selflessness. Think Driver, Kampmann, Jenkins, etc.
Collins and his agents are clueless as to their foe's tendencies... |
