I know there are some MMA fans on this board. I am not one of those, but I am curious. What do y'all think of Kimbo Slice?

What is there to think about? Ex-street fighter trying to make the conversion to the regulated fight game. Big, strong, powerful man that can throw punches and take a punch but can't do much else. With the proper training, which he is getting, he could turn into a pretty good MMA fighter. Until then he is just a charasmatic old-school brawler that will put rear ends in the seats of arenas.

Right now, More of an internet legend than anything else. He'd be wiped out very quickly if he stepped in the ring with any of the true MMA fighters.

With proper training maybe he'll become something but I'm not holding my breath.

No I'm using my breath to yawn

Actually, MMA is an aircraft development program. I'd say more, but then .... well, .... you know. BTW, it won't help GB one bit.

The slow death of boxing has created a void in the sports market in general, so if MMA takes off, we'll all have something to look forward to during this slow time of summer, where the NBA and NHL are winding down, MLB is getting into their 'dog' days, so to speak, the NFL is almost totally off the map for the time being, other than arrests and food poisoning stories, of course, and no 'other' sporting events like the Olympics or World Cup to fill this time. (I know the Olympics are this year, but IMHO when they happen after football starts and when they're held in a place that's about 3 weeks ahead of us in terms of time difference, they're relegated to 'check the results online' and that's about it).

I still remember when I was a kid how there would always be at least one big fight or two every summer, but since boxing went the way of the WWE I bet many couldn't even name the heavyweight champ right now. The growth of MMA to me shows that there's still a market for pugilism, even though boxing created its own void. I'm interested to see where this goes.

Nice post, big man. You have just defined the source of my curiosity in MMA. The death of boxing. When I lived in Africa, my Dad and I would wake up at 3 in the morning to watch the big fights. When we couldn't watch them we listened on the radio. It amazes me that it was when I moved to the US that boxing "disappeared from my radar".

As for Slice, Boris has confirmed my suspicions, that he is still really a street fighter who would quickly secummed to the best in MMA. Still, man, what a street fighter. Is he expected to win tonight?

I would say yes. James Thompson has plenty of experience (fought multiple times in PRIDE) but he too is an unpolished standup fighter with a questionable chin and questionable endurance. I would say the over-under on the length of this fight would be right about three minutes.

Gina is fighting tonight too. drool

Newflash:

Gina missed weight (144.5 at the 140 pound limit) but the fight is still on. Her opponent agreed to the fight and will receive 12.5% of Gina's purse.

Slice would get worked by a decent MMA guy. He would have a punchers chance against any of the MMA guys that want to stand up and throw hands.

They are building up his urban legend right now by matching him against used to be's and has beens.

A Brock Lesner/Slice fight would put people in the seats and get huge PPV buys.

Yeah, Tank Abbott had no business in a ring, much less a real fight. Slice is an imposing man- but true MMA champion level fighters would probably smoke the guy. But I would love to see Lesner and Slice go at it. That would be a brutal fight...
