From AOL

When I was at the draft, Trey Wingo and the boys were discussing the Vikings and some were saying how they are now the team to beat.

I screamed out to Trey, "C'mon guys! The Vikings have won the Super Bowl the last 7 off-seasons..." Trey Wingo turned looked at me and shook his head yes.

That was a fun moment.

The biggest issue, of course, is Tarvaris Jackson. Lucky for the Vikings, if he struggles, there's always Gus Frerotte.

Lucky for the Vikes, Adrian Peterson has been hurt the last 3 years also.

Paper Champs!

Well here we go again. The Vikes have again made some decent offseason moves and are getting the press again as to they're the ones to beat. Get's old, but one of these years.....

Seriously though, with the additions of Allen, Madieu Williams, and drafting saftey Tyrell Johnson, the pass defense will improve. Run defense will be stout again as well. You know what they say about defenses....

Berriman is better then what they had at WR. He'll help and make the offense better.

As for Tavaris Jackson, here's something to think about. How'd Favre do his first couple years? While his play has lacked continuity, what if Jackson continues to develop and I don't know, get's better? Offense is pretty damn good without Jackson. If he continues to improve in what, his SECOND year of starting, just how good could this offense be?

Then there's Adrian Peterson. I like his stats despite all the "injuries". Whatcha think there Artist.

No, the running game was good, not the offense. The passing game was 28th in the league. Your offense cannot be considered "pretty damn good" with or without Jackson when you put up such poor passing numbers.

For the record Brett's stats vs Tavaris for their 1st 2 seasons playing with their respective teams.

Brett season 1&2 with the Packers:
Yards-6530, TD's-37, INT's-37

Season 3 Yards-3882, TD's-33, INT's-14
-----------------------------------------
Tavaris Jackson seasons 1&2 with the Vikes:
Yards-2386, TD's-11, INT's-16

Season 3-????

Tavaris not even in the same ballpark as Brett.

"Tavaris not even in the same ballpark as Brett"

No he's not. Never said he was. Doesn't have to be. Just has to be consistant.

Figured you'd be first there mister yuck. I've recognized your "take" on the Vikings for a while know. Something tells me you have a distaste for them.
I won't asked you to be unbiased in your take. Personnaly I don't think that's an option.

I never said Jackson was in the same league as Favre, just saying you don't know what you have in a quarterback, based on one year of starting. Jackson played 4 games in his first year. He was 8-4 as a starter last year.

Sure, your posted stats don't look good for Jackson. I've seen them.

I disagree with your analysis of the Viking's offense (imagine that).

ETR,

Don't get into this "he was 8-4" crap. TarJack had little to do with the wins. I guess it's encouraging he didn't blow games, but that's tough to do when all you have to do it turn and hand to AD. This guy is a sub-standard NFL QB and always will be. Sadly, your BTK lookalike head coach is too prideful to spend money where it really should've been spent because he stuck his neck out like an idiot and wasted a 2nd on a raw kid out of Alabama State. I will never view the Vikes as a threat with BTK running the show. Never.

Congrats, again, on winning the off-season SB. You guys are so very good at that. Enjoy the now. September comes all too soon to steal your expectations and joy.

Jared Allen isn't going to save your franchise, and we all know AD will be hurt a significant portion of the upcoming season. Plus, don't forget that he looked ordinary after Harris took out his knees at Lambeau. He had one good game vs. Detroit (who doesn't) and after that he averaged a whopping 2. something a carry over his last 3-4 games. Not encouraging. I expect the sophomore jinx to hit this guy. Plus, Birk may not be there on the oline and McKinnie is on the verge of a suspension. It doesn't look good for your offense as far as I'm concerned. Your D is intriguing, but you have nobody on the other side to complement Allen, and that's why you Herscheled this deal with KC. Phat Pat and KW don't put pressure on the QB. Jared Allen better be a one man band.

Your organization is like someone who goes out and spends a fortune on the 3 best tires money can buy and ignores the 4th leaving it bald and ready to blow. You did not address the QB problem, nor did you give Allen any pass rushing help on the Dline. Those areas will haunt you. On the bright side, I hear TJ looks amazing zipping balls into nets in non-live action. At least he has a post NFL career in a circus awaiting him. That is a neat trick.

Let's not get into that again, K?

A win is a win now isn't it. Your opinion means little to me as far as how good the offense will be. I expect that here.

Dissing AD? You'd be lucky to have him. Sophomore jinx after ROY and pro bowl MVP (I know the pro bowl means nothing)? I don't see it happening. Injuries? Hard to predict, but he's been very good through any he's had. Chester Taylor is about the best backup in the league so if AD does go down, I'd expect the RB output to be about the same. Also, we got that Hicks guy from SF. Looks like he can play.

You can "say" TJack won't ever improve, I'd perfer to see the results of another year of training camp and working with the players and coaches.

Denial is not just a river in Africa.

Dude take a look at the Bears before last year and you'll see failure because of a bad QB. Orton...Krenzel...Grobesman... Come back to reality and their defense was twice as good as yours.

How many times did the Packers beat the Bears last year?

Bear's defense hasn't been twice as good as anyone's for awhile now.

Comparing the Vikings offense to the Bears, QB not withstanding, is a joke.

I agree. The Viking offense is light years ahead of the Bears.

I love it when the Vikings win the Super Bowl in April/May. It makes for a fun season. Smiler

Ah, about the Pro Bowl. If you are judging him "back" by the results of a game more meaningless and played with less passion than ANY NFL game you will ever see, even the 4th pre-season game, then have at it. The irony of that game is MM was trying to get him injured by continually giving him the ball. I really believe that's what our head coach was trying to accomplish.

If you look at YPC Chester Taylor was just a wee bit behind AD by .2 YPC. That is OFFENSIVE LINE related. Just like in Denver all those years...they didn't have a continuing stable of unbelievable RB's they had an unbelievable oline and system. You may have no Matt Birk and no McKinnie. That will undeniably hurt your running game and also your passing game if it could possibly get worse.

I guess you think adding Bernard Berrian who, at best, would be a #3 in Green Bay is going to make all the difference? You know the line is going to be weaker and AD will be hurt at some point. Plus, Bevell and Childress orchestrate your O...I guess that's enough for me to know it won't be successful.

I'll be curious to see your defense. Phat Pat turns 36 in season. Will you cut Sharper? He was the only guy to make ints albeit by cherry picking.

This season has a lot of fun ingredients for me. I finally get to see Aaron Rodgers take over while Vikes fans believe they're finally out from under the Favre shadow. Now, they believe they might actually win an NFC NORTH TITLE, which they have never done by the way. I love it. Huge expectations of our demise and their "improvement"... rude, rude awakening come September.

The Vikings have a lot going for themselves on paper, but two MAJOR problems to solve that were clear from last year.

1. Coach Major Dad
2. Having perhaps the worst starting QB in the entire NFL.

The key to the Vikings season will be how those two things play out. Does the coaching get better? Does the QB get more consistent?

I find it absolutely comical how Pack fans continually spout this off.

Can you please elaborate as to what gives you so much confidence in rodgers? what exactly has he done that make you think that he is the second coming?

At least our qb has started on Sundays

This is the equivalent of us saying last off-season... What makes you so confident in AD? At least Vernand Morency has started on Sunday's. Who the heck cares about the fact he's started on Sunday's... Bill Joe Tolliver, Todd Marinovich, Heath Shuler, Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Andre Ware, David Klingler, Rick Mirer, etc. ALL started on Sunday's. And...THEY ALL SUCKED HARD.

TarJack blows. Are you honestly going to argue that point? Aaron Rodgers was very close to being the overall #1 pick in '05. He was amazing at Cal. He's learned for 3 seasons and understands the WCO, which TarJack does not. He played lights out on the road on national TV in relief during a game the Packers were getting killed in. Plus, last pre-season he undeniably outplayed Brett Favre. He was outstanding and you could see his development.

I'll bank on a highly touted prospect out of college that flashed in the pros on a big stage vs. a guy from Alabama State who, to this point, has been nothing short of horrific as a starting QB. Argue until you're purple but deep down you know TarJack is terrible and you aren't going anywhere under his leadership, or BTK's for that matter... AND...You added GUS FREROTTE as your insurance policy. Man, that's more ballsy than us going in with the rooks as backups.

You will rue the day you did not draft Brian Brohm.

I don't see how the Bears did has any relation to how the Vikings are??? Confused

But that's what stupid fans do of Paper Super Bowl Champs. Try to sugar a signing of a safety from a team that has had the worst Secondary in the league and overpay(williams); trade half the draft for a guy worried about personal stats instead of his overall game and one DUI away from a suspension; not draft a good QB to compete with the worst starter in the NFL(Tito Jackson); draft a QB after the good ones were gone that has the smallest hands in the league and lost the biggest upset in the NCAA history; neglect the fact that Sharper sucks, the other CB couldn't cover George Burns at 90; and have a RB that will be out of the league a few games every year because of his running style.

And Ease up on the personal attacks, I was comparing the Vikes D to the Bears and their QB, re-read the post Ease up on the personal attacks. THANKS!!

Vikings waive DE James after troubled, injury-riddled career

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Vikings on Friday waived Erasmus James, the former first-round draft pick who had a series of knee injuries during his time with Minnesota.

The defensive end was one of the top-rated pass rushers in 2005 when Minnesota chose him out of Wisconsin with the 18th overall pick. But after notching four sacks in 15 games during his rookie season, James tore the ACL in his left knee in Week 2 of the 2006 season.

James returned last season and played sparingly in six games. He suffered a similar injury to the same knee in Week 13 against Detroit and again landed on injured reserve.

The Vikings waived him after he failed a physical.

"We decided to waive Erasmus and we wish the best for him in the future," coach Brad Childress said in a statement issued by the team.

After his second injury, Childress said he expected James to make a full recovery. The 25-year-old James attended the four days of "organized team activities" this week and participated on a limited basis.

Calls to James' agent, Ethan Lock, seeking comment were not immediately returned.

The injuries weren't the only factor that made James' tenure in Minnesota a little rocky. He got into a fight with running back Chester Taylor in the locker room late last season and was openly ridiculed by teammates during his rookie year when he responded harshly to some hazing by the veterans.

His talent as a pass rusher, however, was never in question during his first year, and the Vikings sorely missed him on the defensive line the last two seasons, an absence that contributed to the team ranking last in the league in pass defense.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3410022

I guess he is not a piece of the Super Bowl puzzle either. There's a 1st round draft choice huntin to hell.

The pass defense will be somewhat better, the run defense will suffer though. Allen is not much of a run stopper and Ray Edwards at LDE? He'll get buried and injured in no time flat against maulers at RT. Say what you want about Udeze not quite getting to the QB, but the guy was darned stout against the run and kept the linebacker behind him clean. Roll the TE making a Strong (offensive) left side and run at the Edwards/Greenway soft spot all day long. Williams and Williams are stout, but can't cover the whole field. And EJ couldn't cover me. That's a problem in the cover-2 and will remain one. Madieu Williams is a decent player, but the Vikings gave him star money, about $10m too much.

Berrian is a decent deep threat with an even less accurate QB throwing to him now. Rice has potential, but is behind the 8-ball in that offense. Wade's just a guy and Allison has trouble putting a sentence together. T-Joke blows. The only two guys dumber than him are Aundre Allison and EJH. If he were a d-back that would be okay but he's the QB.

The RG and RT spots are mediocre, at best. Hutch, Birk are very good, McKinnie can be (when not suspended or loafing) and the HB TANDEM is good. Richardson will be missed as an outlet and a blocker. TE is a void for pass catchers (though Kleinsasser blocks like a tackle).

That's a a lot of holes, not counting coach childish.

I wonder if the Vikings are cursed...you know...

the curse of the Herschel Walker trade...the NFL Gods are punishing them for being handing the Cowboys those SuperBowls in the 90's.
