McCarthy ranked 16th among NFL coaches
By Bob Wolfley of the Journal Sentinel Jun. 8, 2009 11:33 a.m. Coach Mike McCarthy is ranked the 16th-best coach in the NFL by RealScouts, a group of former NFL scouts who do work for Sporting News Today. "He has the necessary belief in his team to make bold changes and make them pay off," the brief summary of McCarthy reads. "Last year, he dumped Brett Favre for Aaron Rodgers. This season, he moves his defense to a 3-4 scheme. He always is looking for ways to make the team better." Brad Childress of Minnesota is ranked ahead of McCarthy at No. 11. Lovie Smith of Chicago is ranked behind him at No. 20, and Jim Schwartz of Detroit is ranked No. 27, among the 32 head coaches in the league. Bill Belichick of New England is ranked No. 1, followed by Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants, Andy Reid of Philadelphia, Jeff Fisher of Tennessee and Mike Tomlin of Pittsburgh. Josh McDaniels of Denver is ranked last, below Raheem Morris of Tampa Bay, Tom Cable of Oakland, Todd Haley of Kansas City and Jim Caldwell of Indianapolis. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CKA nearly a top 10 coach in the NFL? YES! Keep these stories alive! Will only mean CKA stays HC |

How can they possibly rank the new coaches when it's not even training camp?!?
And Fisher, Reid, Tomlin, and maybe even Coughlin are too high. Fisher doesn't do anything in the playoffs, and neither does Reid. Tomlin pretty much inherited his team, but I do give him credit for keeping it going as long as he has. |

There's a reason they're former scouts, I think. Smith 9 spots behind CKA? Smith has been to a Super Bowl and done pretty well with very little talent. McCarthy has been to an NFC championship game. CKA has been one and done in the playoffs. People are out of their minds.

No way CKA's a better coach than MM is.
I'd put MM borderline top ten-ish, and Lovie should be higher than 20 too. |

For off-season banter-driving rubbish, this piece still comes off as tossing darts at a board in many places. Even if you take MM out of the equation, ranking CKA nine spots above Lovie is asinine. If Lovie and CKA switched jobs, MN would actually be a legitimate contender and CHI would be scrapping with Detoilet for the cellar spot in the division.

Wow! This is like one of those "World's Greatest Guitarist" polls that ranks Bonnie Raitt and Roy Orbison ahead of Eddie Van Halen and Carlos Santana.
I'll be the first to admit Lovie Smith isn't the best game-day coach, but #20? Singletary's better? Really? Tony Sparano? Wade Phillips? Jim Mora Jr.? Dick Jauron? CHILDRESS?!? The more I look at this list, the more laughable it is. Sean Payton at #6?!? Did Katrina come back? Norv Turner at #13? The guy lead probably the most talented team in the league to an 8-8 record (and they were lucky to be that). Funny stuff! B-N-D |

Nobody did less with more in the NFL last year than Suede Phillips. Ranking the new guys at the bottom is a cop-out as well. Where would this team of geenyouses have ranked John Harbaugh and/or Mike Smith at this time last year?

Some guys are just not born to be head coaches but ARE born to be coordinators.
Norv Turner & Wade Phillips are awesome OC and DC respectively. They cannot head coach an NFL football team to a championship. Lovie is a good HC. MM needs to prove a lot this season or he will be in the "Norv / Wade" category pretty soon. |

Coughlin was a Phillips before NY went on their run in 07.
The mere fact that CKA made the Top 32 is impressive. |

Reid doesn't do anything in the playoffs? He has taken the Eagles to five NFC Championships, winning one of them. The only thing he hasn't done is win it all. |

Maybe it's the Vicodin, but I've been laughing about that for the last 10 minutes. |
