i don't think that's a bad decision at all. they never let orton do anything when he started a few games a couple years ago. at least they will see what they have and determine whether or not he's worth a roster spot next year. even though they aren't mathematically eliminated, with a 2-7 conference record and 1-3 in the division they are toast.

Not a ringing endorsement for Greasy. Who's next Jeff George?

I wonder if the ultimate purpose of this is to see if Orton can be an adequate "caretaker" QB while a 1st round rookie gets up to speed next season. If this appears to be so, they cand let TrainRex and Griese walk at the end of this season and draft a QB.

I thought the exact same thing. I think it's a smart move by Lovie, see what he has now that the season is lost. They're definitely going QB #1 next year if they can't nab McNabb. |

they have quite a few needs. O-line is in need for a major turnover. They have been awful all year. They also need a RB

With their track record at picking QB's in the 1st round, they would be fools to do it again. They need a major upgrade on the OL and a serviceable running back before a QB. |

I agree with the above thoughts that the offensive line is a bigger need for them than a quarterback.
But it will all come down to opportunity. While there isn't an elite QB talent in this draft, there are three players that could be taken in the first half of round one. If you are the Bears and are picking around #10, it's likely that at least one of those three will be available and it would be hard to pass on a quarterback at that spot. Also, as of now I think the only offensive lineman that carries a top half of round one grade is Michigan OT-Jake Long, and he'll probably be off the board before the Bear's pick comes up (I think they would have to lose all their remaining games to even have an outside shot at him). The "left-field" pick that I think would be a good pick for them would be USC DT-Sedrick Ellis. As we've seen this year, when you play the style of defense they play you really need 3 to 4 good defensive tackles. Tommie Harris looked OK but post-injury he might only bounce back to a good+ player, not the dominator he once was. Walker is OK and he's good enough in a rotation but I think Bear fans have clearly seen why he has bounced around the league a bit in the last few years. You can't really count on Dvoracek at this point because of his injury background. Anthony Adams is just a guy. So while the Bears have numbers there, they really don't have much quality that you really can rely on and IMO this area is the #1 reason why the defense has fell off so dramatically. Ellis won't post huge stats but he is a difference maker that can really be disruptive in the middle and keep the linebackers clean. If he's available when they pick, I think they would have a really, really hard time passing on him because he looks every bit like the real deal and he potentially really gives that defense a boost. |

Cool. Lovie pulling out "all the stops" to get Jack Daniels boy ready to face Green Bay.

Exactly why they should NOT draft a QB in round 1 but rather use that on the OL. A very good QB can be found on day 2 if you have the time, patience, and someone to coach them up. That said, they'll probably draft a QB in round 1 and throw him to the wolves by week 9 when they are out of the playoff hunt. |

I'm cool with Orton starting the rest of this year's games, but man does he look scruffy. Kind of a mix between late-60s beatnik and grunge-era homeless. I'd definitely hold my daughter's hand a little tighter if I saw him coming towards us on the street.

You would look like that to if you had to wait around to play behind superstars like Griese and Grossman. |

As a Bear's fan, I appreciate your thoughtful and objective analysis, but I'd be surprised if the Bears take a DT in the first round. They just have too many needs elsewhere. Walker, Adams, Idonije, Dvoracek and Harris are all injured. While none, save Harris, are studs by themselves (even when healthy), they're all OK in a rotation-heavy scheme. They might add a little depth in the off-season, but I think for the most part they'll go with what they've got. I expect the Bears will go OT or Safety depending on how free-agency and the draft unfold. They might even, shocker of shockers, go with a linebacker if they can't resign Briggs and Urlacher's back continues to deginerate. The Bears have been burned repeatedly by early RB picks, so I doubt they'll go that road. They'll address that need in free-agency. B-N-D |

I would not be surprised in the least to see the bears start next season with only one of their current 3 QBs still on the team.
I figure Griese is gone if Orton shows he can be a viable back-up. I think it is only 50-50 at best whether GROSSman is back. If I were the GM of the bears (God forbid) I would be having some serious talks with the Browns about either Quinn or Anderson and there would be no one on the team that I would rule out of a trade...not Hester, not Urlacher, not Berriman |

He reads Jack Kerouac in his lucky Nirvana t-shirt while listening to some Mother Love Bone to get pumped for the game. I like Orton. Why can't be a decent NFL QB? |

THIS is what the Bears are hoping will be less "ineffective" than Bryan?
Oy. If Halas was alive, he'd have a heart attack and die. It's the first time I've ever seen this Orton creature. And I'm willing to bet money that it's the last time, too. |

I think YA is right. I think their QB next year could very well end up being Donovan McNabb. It sure seems like his time in Philly is through and both he and the Eagles are ready to move on. McNabb is from Chicago. After the SuperBowl last year Tommie Harris actually said that if the Bears would have had McNabb they would have won that game. Since McNabb has had those injury problems he won't command a top price. I think a McNabb for a second round pick swap is a reasonable move and I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him in a Bear's uniform next year. |

It's gonna take more than McNabb for them to get back to the SB.

Right, since it took TO to get McNabb to the Super Bowl.
