Nope, musta' missed that day at school. Exactly who were these players? Were they starters? Defensive players? Offensive? Polls aren't an exact science and there are many other players, former players, scouts, and GMs who have made statements that contradict these polls.

So, what's your solution? Hook all 1696 players to lie detectors and question them about the greatness of one Brian Urlacher? Now, that sounds reasonable. Shooting down a well proven method with that argument makes you look like a, well a Bears fan.

I can't believe intelligent football fans here are flouting some ESPN generated poll (from several years ago) as proof that Urlacher is overrated. These are the same people who scan Perez Hilton's blog to find out what's "hot" and hurridly run for a copy of Rolling Stone to find out who the all-time best guitarist is for this year.

For what it's worth, I wasn't surprised Urlacher was the "leader" of the poll that year. If I rememeber correctly, the poll came out in 2005, after Urlacher's one truly duff season (2004) when he seemed to be in the tabloids everyday for his palimony suits, dating Paris Hilton, etc., etc. Even I was pretty sick of the guy at the time Smiler.

But that doesn't overshaddow what he's accomplished over the course of his career--which has been pretty illustrious to this point (especially when you consider the guy isn't even 30 yet). Heck, even if you want to continue to put stock in that outdated poll, you have to acknowledge that Urlacher was in good company--many of the other "overrated" players on that list are future Hall of Famers.

I think people look at Ulracher a lot like they did with Mike Alstott and this is especially relevant to Packer fans because of things like the Pro Bowl where the Packers player (i.e. a William Henderson or Nick Barnett) got snubbed time and time again because of hype and not performance.

Barnett was a better LB this year (than Ulracher) but because he's not one of the media darlings it really doesn't seem to matter. That doesn't make Ulracher a bad player by any stretch because I think he's pretty solid overall. However, he clearly isn't the "elite" player that some people make him out to be either. He was anointed since day one and unlike a Peyton Manning or Ray Lewis he hasn't done enough to support that rep or pub. That's the way I see it.

My solution? Don't put any stock in this sort of garbage. It is especially ridiculous when polls are used to quantify something that is impossible to measure.

Impossible to measure? In your world, maybe, but every 4 years in this country, we quantify folks opinions and used those tabulated figures to decide on our next leader.

Of course, the activities over the last 8 years may prove you quite right. Smiler

There is a vast difference between a vote on who should lead our country and a vote on something as arbitrary as 'overrated' players. Although both could be perceived as a popularity contest, since my belief is that both sets of voters didn't focus on the real issues. Smiler

Happy mother's Day to any mother who is brave enough to participate in this kind of stuff. And yes, I have a mother, despite some folks believing all Bears fans were hatched. Big Grin
