Before the 2005 season, Brett Favre recalled a cautionary tale he'd seen firsthand as a teenager.

Three years later, that memory seems more relevant than ever. As a young Favre sat in the Louisiana Superdome stands for the first time, he saw a disappointing image that would stay with him: Kenny Stabler, who'd led the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl XI title, winding down his career with the New Orleans Saints, who would go 19-22 in Stabler's sad three seasons in the Big not-so-Easy.
``I was a young kid, and I remember going to a Saints game -- 1983, maybe. And Kenny Stabler was the quarterback,'' the retired-for-now Green Bay Packers quarterback said in an interview during the 2005 training camp. ``My dad and my uncle and my older brother, Scott, we went. And I couldn't wait to see Kenny Stabler come out of the locker room.

''He came out and his hair was all long, his uniform was hanging off of him -- his better days were behind him. I just remember, to the fans, he was just the savior. Boy, once they got him in New Orleans, he was going to turn them around. Well, that didn't happen.

``I'd hate to go somewhere else and have everybody say, 'Hey, we've got Brett.' I mean, too many great things have happened for me here. And if it ends tomorrow, it ends tomorrow. But I don't need to go somewhere else and prove anything.''

''I don't see myself like a Kenny Stabler. No offense to him, he had a great career and he was a great quarterback. But I see myself as a Packer, and that's it. I don't ever see myself in another uniform. And when it's my time, I hope I know.``

''I'm not saying leaving (the game) would be easy. But you don't want to still feel like you can play and in reality you ain't worth a (expletive) and then after the fact you realize, 'I should have left.' So yeah, that's a concern for me,`` Favre said then. ''I know this: I won't go and play somewhere else. It ain't worth it to me to start over, to try to start another career for a year or two. I don't want to do that. Too much has happened here. Emmitt Smith is a Cowboy to me and he's always going to be. That won't happen with me.``

I wonder if Favre was thinking about Kenny Stabler (or recalled what he had said about him) when he sat looking totally out-of-place in that first Jets PC?

Only difference between Stabler and Favre physically is that Favre can still actually play at a high level.

Mentally, only God knows where Favre is at now. From his recent comments, it looks like he still isn't over the fact that he's not in Green Bay and I still don't even know if he's committed to playing at the level he needs to be.

I just hope he doesn't get hurt or embarrasses himself. As much as I hate his diva-like behavior recently, he will still be one of my favorite Packers of all time.

I posted this in another thread as well. Around 94 or 95 Ryne Sandberg retired from the Cubs. He sat out a year and then unretired and played 2-3 more seasons with the Cubs. It was 95 when Jordan came back the first time as well. I remember an interview with Favre around this time, probably 1996, saying he didn't like it when guys would retire only to unretire a year or 2 later. He said if you want to retire just retire and be done with it. Oh, the irony.

But the difference is, Favre didn't sit out an entire season like Sandberg or Jordan.

We do know that Favre didn't put in the work during the offseason like he needs to put in for a guy that will turn 39 in October.

It'll be interesting to see if he can sustain the rigors of another football season for 16 games.

My hope is he doesn't get hurt. I would hate to see that.

Someone in the media should bring up this article to Brett and see what he says.

I have said this before, I think Brett Favre has conjured up a batch of bad karma. We'll see what happens.

My gut tells me that if Favre had sat out a year, like Reggie White, and then asked to be released, things might have been different.

I agree Smedley. 100% for sure the Packers would have released him if it was 2009.

NFL Jeopardy 2008

I'll take As The Packers Turn for 1000 Alex.

The answer is: I'm not changing teams. Won't happen to me!

What is, Brett's answer to Ted's advancements?
