Curious question: Does Favre's retirement by any chance put the Packers below the salary cap minimum?

From the web site, looks like we are 37.3 mill belsow the cap. With that, TT can bring in 10 candidates to replace him.

Yes, the minimum is 86.4% of the $116.729m salary cap (i.e., ~$100.854m). Spending to that amount should not be a problem; I also expect that the Packers will "carry forward" a significant amount into 2009 when all is said and done.

Here are some suggestions to Mr. Thompson on what to do with all that extra cap space.

Give Mark Tauscher a nice contract extension.

Get any kinks worked out of Charles Woodson's deal.

Give Ryan Pickett a nice big fat raise.

Give Aaron Kampman an additional bump.

Give Greg Jennings that 7-year deal right now.

And keep the strategy of not vastly overpaying for other teams free agents. After all, there must be a reason why those players got to free agency in the first place.

Cpheph1 has updated the cappage due to Favre's retirement.

If Favre files his retirement papers AFTER June 1st, I think the Packers gain about $600K more space ($11.4 Million vs. $12 Million).

Let's see what Favre does. Smiler

If we're lucky maybe there will be some FA busts to blow the cap money on!!
We should always spend every dime of the cap, whether there is someone worthy of the cash or not. Roll Eyes

Thanks for the heads up on the minimum cpheph1

or just maybe there are some fa players that can help the team. But then again , maybe not..Never will know. TT won't get involved in bidding for a player...

Damn Rob. You should have told me you were privy to every conversation TT has with FA's, agents, other teams, etc.... You could have saved me some time in disputing anything you post.

You like GM's that over-spend get us into cap-hell and leave the team with no depth. I like Ted Thompson.

I gotta say, we have a pretty lean cap situation. Props to ROTTT for minimizing the waste.

At least one more year is my guess. Unless GB has another pass-rusher lined up I can't imagine they'd let him go...

In the last year column, what does EFA mean? I can gather that RFA = Restricted Free Agent, but EFA doesn't make sense - the only thing that makes sense is Eligible Free Agent. But, if that is the case, does that mean they are free agents right now? If so, what's going on with Ryan Grant, Atari Bigby, Ruvell Martin, Tory Humphrey, and John Kuhn?

I think I read that Rodgers pay goes up substantially when he becomes the starter. This was supposedly in a clause in his contract. If thats true his pay for 08 would be more than the $680,000 listed, thus altering the available CAP money somewhat.

Wondering if Ceph knows anything about that?

Exclusive rights FA. Not under contract yet and not enough tenure to be a RFA or UFA. In short, those players are forced to re-sign with the Packers.

Here's a link to Aaron Rodgers' escalator clauses. My interpretation is he won't receive the pay increase until he plays 50% or more of the offensive snaps...and I'm guessing it's considered NLTBE incentive at this time.

The thing that immediately caught my attention was that the top 3 cap numbers, and 5 of the top 10, are lineman. I wonder how many teams have a similar distribution. I would guess that there are not to many. NFL salary scales certainly have sure changed in the last few years. Even 3 or 4 years ago the "skill position" players had all the big numbers and the lineman were far behind.

When Rodgers signed his deal with the escalator’s it looked good for him. Who, in the spring of 2005, thought that Favre was going to play through 2007? According to the link Cpheph1 posted Rodgers will only receive an additional $2.2 million to his salary for being the starter this season – providing he plays on the 50% of the offensive snaps. As a starter he will come fairly cheap for 2008. ROTTT!!!!!!
