Cap update for 13 October 2008 includes new players added to 53 man roster (Wynn, Pettaway, & Lansanah). Tracy White, although cut, counts his full previous cap value (vested veteran).

I said the same thing in the other thread.

Just ridiculous what Jennings is getting paid.

He seriously needs a long term deal approaching $50 to $60 million and I'm not kidding. Rodgers will probably command something similar by the end of this season.

We have a ridiculous number of free agents after this year:
Humphrey Tory
Williams Tramon
Bigby Atari
Martin Ruvell
Kuhn John
Bush Jarrett (don't let the door hit you on the way out)
Hunter Jason
Montgomery Michael
Tauscher Mark
Cole Collin

These guys all play right now. Hopefully we can sign most of them to keep this team together. It's also looking pretty bad next year Frowner

There's a lot of guys, but no one who would demand large $$$'s on the open market. Even Tauscher would not command the $$$'s like he probably would have a few years ago. The main targets on that list should be, IMO:

1. Williams
2. Tausch/Bigby
3. Cole

The rest of em'......if they are Packers next season, fine if not.....fine.

We definitely need to get Rodgers extended (tt said they would begin the process if Rodgers has a good 1st half of the season, which he has so far).
Need to show Jennings some love.

I see only 3 on that list that I consider "important". Bigby, T. Williams, and Tauscher.

I think we've seen that with Bigby out, the safety play is not as stout as it was last year. Williams has been very solid with Harris out and looks like a keeper. Tauscher is a little more questionable as he isn't having a great year, but I think you've got try to get him to end his career here if at all possible

Can the Packers use this $20M entirely as roster bonus' for guys like Jennings and Rodgers?

I understand that a signing bonus spreads out over the time of the contract. Let's say they want to sign Rodgers and Jennings before the season ends. Naturally, you have to leave a portion of cash for emergencies. But what if they give $18M to the two of them in the form of a roster bonus. For example, each get $9M in a roster bonus that states in the contract "if they are on the roster on November 19, they get $9M". If I understand correctly, the bonus counts entirely in the 2008 cap, with it's $20M surplus.

Can they do this? Why wouldn't they do this?

Are Tramon Williams and Atari Bigby going to be "Exclusive Rights" FAs or "Restricted" FAs? Or will they be unrestricted?

Bigby played in one game in 2005 but I don't think that he was on the active roster very long so it wasn't an accrued year for him. NFL.COM lists him as a 3rd year player so he should be RFA this year. I think the same is true of Williams and 2006 so he is a 2nd year player and an EFA.

And the roster bonus works like you think it does. I think they would have until December to use this years cap space on contract extensions.

Forgot about the EFA and RFA stuff... that definitely will have an effect.

FLARob, couldn't agree with you more WRT Jennings! $20.04m remaining on the 2008 cap is a lot of $$ they can still use e.g., front-load this year for Greg and have the remaining years relatively inexpensive in the long run.

Concur on Aaron Rodgers too. I would also extend Mark Tauscher.

Good discussion WRT the FAs and their respective tag. Can't really
add anything there to those facts...Definitely concur with The Artist
fka TD.

1. Yes
2. Very good question...I don't know why they wouldn't spend at least $13-15m on those two...$18m might be a little high but it would be doable IMO.

He certainly seems like the obvious choice...two other candidates could be Kenny Pettaway or C. Peprah.
