Man, I have such mixed feelings about bean-counters. My wife is one of those people who'd love to do this sort of thing for a living - I call her a 'closet accountant'. Me? I just don't get it. People start talking finances and my eyes glaze over. It's not that I'm not too stupid for the topic, it's just that I'm just extremely uninterested.

From the chart, what's LTBE?

**edit** wait... I think I pulled it. Likely To Be Earned? As in bonuses?

Looking at that makes you wonder what the odds are of KGB actually playing w/ a $5M base salary next year...or Ferguson at $1.8M.

Very low I suspect.

I'd have to cut both of those in half...or just cut Ferg; he's done IMO.

Ferg is a bust. Cut our losses and get him off the payroll asap.

Easily the best source I've ever seen regarding the Packers cap. Great job getting this added to the site!

Keep up the good work

So let me see if I can interpret that chart correctly.

To find out the net cap change if a player were to be cut or (we hope not) retire...

You take the number of years left on the contract (say 2010-2007) times the prorated bonus (say $800,000) minus the base salary (say $11,000,000).

So from my example the amount of money counted against the cap change would be 3,200,000 - 11,000,000 or a net cap gain of 7,800,000.

Is that correct?

Where does the Likely to be earned Bonuses fit into that equation?

From the chart, you won't be able to figure out the net cap gain/loss because I'm not including the remaining ProRated Signing Bonus (PRSB). Favre, for example, has $1.4m remaining PRSB after the 2007 ($800k in 2008 & $600k in 2009).

Someday I might add that column in...but for now, I'm not going to because I'd have to do it manually. (I'm still experimenting/learning with MS Access)

LTBE can be tricky. For example, some roster bonuses are paid by a certain date; in some cases they're paid game-by-game. Charles Woodson has both of those types of roster bonus stipulations.

Bottom line with LTBE is once it's paid, the cap space (and $$) is gone. If it's not paid, then they can get the cap space back.

Speculate...yes, I can do that...and I'm sure you can too.

I think he'll require a signing bonus of at least $5m and a base salary considerably larger than veteran's minimum. Might have to throw-in some other incentives to sweeten the deal.

IMO, the man proved he still has it...he'll require some $$ to stay in Green Bay and I think TT knows it'll be worth keeping him.

Bottom line WAG: He'll be paid $6-9m next season and his cap value will be anywhere between $3m-$4.5m depending on how they want to structure the deal.

Good question...I have NFI. Nobody in AmCapNFL does the Saints but three people do the Steelers & I think the Jets have at least two doing their cap.

IMNSHO, KGB stays because he has very good value as a pass rusher.

Fergy...good special teams player...ok #3 or 4 WR but he's been injury prone and they can get somebody way cheaper to fill his role. (in fact they already have that with Ru Martin & Carlyle Holiday)

Rob Reischel had some interesting ideas/opinions in his "Driver needs helping hand" article...I thought it was a good article anyway.

While Reischel doesn't state the Packers need to carry five WRs in 2007 I think he infers they should...I certainly think they should carry five.

IMO, a team would be insane to pay Green $6 - $9 million next season. There were over 20 running backs who gained over 1,000 yards in 2007. Offer Green a SB of $3 million with a modest base salary; if that's not good enough, find a younger, faster and cheaper alternative. Those guys are out there. For example, it didn't take the Colts long to replace Edgerrin James.

Call me insane then because IF I was GM Ted I'd pay him that next year to get his signature on a 3-5 yr contract.

True statement...but I'm apparently missing your point.

Ahman made $3.2m in 2006. $3 million plus a modest 2007 base salary will only get you a one-year deal. I think Ahman is good for three solid or better seasons (solid being what he had in 2006).

It cost the Colts a first round draft choice to get Joseph Addai. I'd rather the Packers use their top pick in another area...preferably DB or WR.

You can't always upgrade on the cheap...

Regardless of what they do with Ahman Green I think it's extremely important that they find a way to add another decent back. They are one or two injuries away from Noah Herron being their starter and that's a scary proposition in my book.

Look at the impact that some backups (or non-feature backs) had this year for a number of teams. Guys like Maroney, Jones-Drew, Marion Barber, Michael Turner, Reggie Bush, Jerious Norwood, etc all had a pretty significant impact as either change of pace guys or specialty guys.

Morency didn't have an awful year and I think he's a solid #3 guy but they need another back in the mix that has more playmaking ability than Noah Herron.

The other element or dimension is that Morency was OK in a kick returner role and getting one other good back could allow the Packers to feature Morency a lot more as a special teams guy.

Anyone have a link to a site with all the 2007 draft slots? And when does the NFL announce the compensatory picks?

Thank you.

Well it will be here at some point.

http://www.nfl.com/draft

In the meantime, you can go here for a list of the first 2 rounds anyway

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/sub/mockdraft.html

Compensatory picks will be announced later.
