Gomez has sucked thus far offensively, but I really liked him as a Mets' prospect. He is still young enough, turning 24 next month, to see some offensive improvement. He has a lot of tools and excellent defense in CF is never a bad thing.
I would have preferred to see pitching brought in, but this definitely saves some money by not bringing back Cameron and perhaps frees up some cash for pitching. |

OMG...I thought he would get more than that. From all that I read about dealing with the Twins was Gomez plus for Hardy.
Carlos will be fun to watch but I have to say right now I'm not that jazzed about this.... |

he's fast, but Macha doesn't seem to play to that strength. Would be nice to see some OBP, maybe he can learn. Strong defensively. Cheap.
Thanks again JJ for sucking balls this past year. |

Hardy was in the minors last year. Be realistic. |

Gomez is young and was the key piece to the Santana trade. He was rushed through the minors because he has a ton of talent. He has great speed and plays great defense, if he improves at the plate he becomes a very good player. The more I think about this deal, the more I am warming to it. I usually prefer to gamble on players with upside, and Gomez still has a lot of upside.

I guess I just thought he would fetch at least a pitching prospect on top of that. I find it humorous that I was pimping a Hardy for Denard Span trade before last year and (like Elk said) JJ sucked so bad all we get is another low OBP guy. The bright side is Gomez has been hyped and they don't lose anything defensively. Saving big dough is also nice.
All I ask is Macha goes to the Rickey Henderson school of base stealing this winter 'cause suddenly our boys will not only be power packed but speedy as well. |

Yeah, with Weeks, Escobar and Gomez in the order, there is some serious base stealing threats out there.

OK, I'm off the fence. Let's list positives:
1. Lose nothing, maybe gain at SS. 2. Saves a ton of dough. Opens money for pitching or how about a Prince extension! 3. Don't lose anything defensively. 4. A very fun guy to watch. 5. Still a bunch of options out there for wheeling and dealing. Case, Gamel, Hart...all still in play. Also, like many have said on the other forum, maybe JJ just didn't have that much value. |

Gomez won't be leading off I hope. I see him and Escobar both at the back end of the lineup.

Yeah, you are right... However, I'm not a fan of GoGo, Esco, C at the bottom... |

Maybe Hart can bring in a #4 pitcher for the rotation? I would guess this is the first of many moves. |

4.65 for Hardy
plus the Cameron money almost covers Suppan's salary. |

What kind of pitcher do you expect to get in return for a .229 or whatever he hit last season who spent time in the minors? When I read about Gomez I can't help but think about TGJ. I always said you don't have to have a power hitter in CF. Im not saying we should have kept him because that is history but a lot of people were harping for a home run hitter out there. |

It was stupid for the Brewers to send Hardy down. That's what killed his trade value, not his BA. You could blow off his BA as a bad year while he still showed power and a reliable glove. But once the team trading him turns him into a AAA player that's about what you can expect to get in return.
The best part about Gomez is he has great speed, potential, and he ends the Cameron era. That means the salary saved can be used on pitching, or Fielder. This move, and a couple to follow, should indicate the move is towards pitching and defense, maybe a little small ball, and maybe hopes that a couple guys improve their OBP to get on for Braun and Fielder. I actually like the trade, I didn't expect much in return once Hardy was sent down. |

100% dead wrong on that (IMO). Sending him down gave him an extra year before free agency. With his crappy year, this INCREASED his trade value, IMO. |

Who knows? I have no idea what Melvin spoke about with other teams. I have no idea if if he would have waited he could have gotten more. My only point is I think him having the extra year gave him more value than without it. I guess Melvin thought Gomez was it. |

I agree. Scouts know how a player is doing, minors or majors. It doesnt matter if he was sent down . He sucked. Im glad they got a centerfielder |
