I'll put on the GM hat.
Gamel, Salome and Suppan for Jackson and Willis |

Correia, who went 12-11 with a 3.91 ERA in 33 starts last season, would be one of the more attractive "non-tender" free agents. He benefited from pitching at Petco Park, but his ERA at home was only a half-run per game lower than it was on the road. For teams in need of rotation help — the Dodgers, Mets and Brewers come to mind — he would be a good fit. here is someone I would love Melvin to be completely on top of. I can't believe we don't have something on the farm that would be amicable to both sides. |

Looks like Jackson is on the move. Brewers not the team it appears.

Scott Olson is a free man, I would take him cheap.

Jon Garland/Doug Davis/Jarrod Washburn — The Brewers almost certainly will sign one of those three; the Mets, Dodgers, Cardinals and Angels could be in the mix for the others, along with the Nationals and Orioles. No concerns with signing any of those 3, as long as it is short and cheap. Probably would like Washburn for 1 or 2 years, then Garland for 1 or 2 years, then Davis. Davis turned down decent money already, not sure if it was dumb on his behalf or he knew he was getting a multiyear somewhere. Also, since the Crew will certainly add another pitcher, what happened to Noah Lowry? This is a guy I liked early on, but his name doesn't come up anywhere. I wonder if he lost his stuff. |

I'll be shocked if the Brewers add any of those pitchers. Now if one comes at a bargain basement price, let's say something like 2 to 2.5 million, then I could see Attanasio giving Melvin the go-ahead. But to add another 5 million on top of what I've figured the payroll is already at....I'd be shocked if that happens.
And if it does happen nobody should be bitching about Attanasio not wanting to spend money or "not going for it." |

The question is should they pay the $6-7M for these guys when they currently do not have an opening in the rotation? If I am correct, they have Gallardo, Wolf, Suppan, Bush, and Parra. They're about to go into arby with Bush, and he'll come cheap after last year. Suppan isn't going anywhere, and Soup's too expensive not to pitch. Just looking at that, it's not a great rotation, but if they can get improvement from Gallardo, Parra, and Bush, and get the same as last year from Wolf, they'll be in pretty good shape. It's better than last year, but how much? |

I don't know
If it's a one or two year deal for a reasonable price (i.e. something in the $5MM range) I would make the move. Sure, they'd have to figure out what to do with Suppan but there is no question that any of those three guys are an upgrade over Suppan |

You are correct hoop. Melvin originally said he was looking for two pitchers, but I assumed that meant Bush would be let go. I don't think he explicitly said Soup would go to the pen, but he did say that jobs would be up for grabs.
It also doesn't hurt to have more than 5 starters at your disposal |

Attanasio might be deciding to "go for it" right now.. and see what happens, come mid season if they arent in it.. they could blow it up and trade some of the high salaried guys to recoup the cost. |

no one seems to have an update on Sheets status, I think he might still be dinged.
Sheets declining arby = worst career decision ever? EDIT: After a quick look... link Ben Sheets — Arguably the best starting pitcher in the entire free-agent class, but the question remains: Is he healthy? Sheets missed all of last season while recovering from elbow surgery. Teams likely will want to see him throw before deciding whether he is worthy of an investment. He still makes the most sense for a high-revenue club that can absorb the risk, but the Yankees and Red Sox do not figure to spend more on starting pitching. Prediction: Cubs. |

if he is healthy he'd be a welcome edition to the team imho, he would improve the staff much more the davis, garland, or washburn combined. the price tag still sounds like way way too much.

I've always been too big of a Ben Sheets fan. So, I'd be pumped if they brought him back. But, I think it's hard to pay a guy primetime dollars that sat out a whole season after an injury.

Haudricort keeps saying that the Brewers won't be knocking on his door anytime in this off-season. Part of me wishes they'd give him a couple mil to play in Mil.

Also, for those advocating the Brewers to sign Jarrod Washburn, it looks like he turned down a one year, $5M deal from the Twins, so that should give some indication of what his pricetag will be.

1 yr deal for sheets to prove his mlb worth (2-2.5 mil with incentives for innings pitched etc) would really be a nice staff with Yogo, Wolf, Sheets, and bounce backs by Bush and Parra.
Not sure if that pricetag is doable or even enough |

Cappy almost back to his old velocity:
http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/81070542.html More depth in AAA. I think Cappy would be nice in the pen as a lefty specialist with that killer pick off move. |

Reds give 5 years, 30 million to Aroldis Chapman. We likely won't see him this year, so at best they are getting 4 years for 30 million. When the talk was for 15 mil, I thought it was something Melvin should get in on, but that seems like crazy money. I wonder where he would have been drafted if we did a true draft.

Sheets reportedly has been asking for a two-year deal averaging around $10 million to $12 million per year, but the Cubs believe they have a good shot at landing him with an incentive-laden deal. |

So they seem content to wait for the prices to go down.
Anyone want to guess how their short list is ranked right now? Doug Davis #1 followed by Washburn? |
