"I wish I had never touched steroids," McGwire said in a statement. "It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era."
...
McGwire also used human growth hormone, a person close to McGwire said, speaking on condition of anonymity because McGwire didn't include that detail in his statement.

McGwire's decision to admit using steroids was prompted by his decision to become hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, his final big league team. La Russa, McGwire's manager in Oakland and St. Louis, has been among McGwire's biggest supporters and thinks returning to the field can restore the former slugger's reputation.

Who didn't see this one coming? His body transformed, much like Bonds and Sosa, over the years.

It will be interesting to see what kind of effect this has on the team being that he is the Cardinals' new hitting coach.

About damn time

You knew he would have to come clean given his new role with the Cardinals and the scrutiny he would have faced

Anyone think Barroid, Sosa, and the rest of the group will come clean?

My guess is he does not get into the HOF unless he buys a ticket. Same with Sosa.

If Bonds gets in it will only come after a number of years of not making it and then only after MLB does some back room dealing with the writers about getting the "all-time" HRl eader in.

None of these clowns should ever get in ahead of Pete Rose.

Barry Bonds is the poster boy for should be not allowed into the hall. If you let him in, you need to legitimize the rest of these goons. He was the king of all this cheating and that is what it is too... cheating.

If these guys get in, then so should Shoeless Joe Jackson... and Pete Rose.

Totally suspending belief, McGwire reiterated several times to Costas that he considered his steroid use to only help in recovering from injuries, not to enhance performance or boost his strength. "I was given the gift to hit home runs," said McGwire. "The only reason I took steriods was for health purposes. I got no power benefit. I did not take this for any strength purposes."

Costas, who certainly knows better, gave McGwire several opportunities to backtrack and clarify that stance, but he refused to do so. Thus, as much credit as you want to give him for coming forward with the steroid admission, you take away points for McGwire's insistance that it didn't help him hit more homers.

The man is a liar and a cheat. His records are tainted and will be in doubt forever.

His only reason for admitting his lies is to gain access to the HOF. That is not sincerity it is another insult to the fans and the game. Go away forever MM.

Ironically, he wouldn't of been a "Big Man" without the steroids. Smiler

BTW, none of the HGH-Blockheads get in unless and until Bonds gets in ... then the HGH guys would flow in(Pun Intended).JMO.

I know a lot of Cardinal fans, you should hear the spin. It was his talent that hit home runs, not the steroids"

Still, I am softening on my position. Not a banned substance, so it is hard to blame these guys for doing it. I think they all get in some day. Like they are going to keep AROD out for needles. I just wish guys like Clemens and Big Mac wouldn't insult my intelligence.

I've raised this question before, but where do we draw the line for performance enhancers? Steroids are different than natural substances because one is a pharmaceutical intervention, chemicals made in a lab. Well, then you could argue that LASIK surgery is a performance enhancer.

The biggest rub on steroids is the abuse. You have to ban it all because if you left it in the hands of doctors, some dumbass would still abuse it to bulk up (not just recover). The medical field is constantly coming up with methods to help us recover faster, build more muscle mass, stay healthier and live longer. Where do you draw the line for what is cheating and what is evolution of the medical field?
