Davis went 9-14 with a 4.12 ERA in 34 starts last season with the D-Backs. Brewers GM Doug Melvin tried twice to acquire him, including a waiver claim in August after which the sides couldn't work out a deal. Do we need three lefties in the starting rotation??? |

A little lefty heavy now. We may be getting a little less Bush at the ballpark this year |

They need good pitchers in the rotation. If a guy throws with his right foot and can keep his ERA under 5 then let's play! |

dollar for dollar, Davis just replaced Looper. Davis typically puts some innings (slowly) behind him with each start, so this could benifit the pen as well.

I like this too.
As CB points out, I really don't care what he's pitching with this team badly needed starting help and their getting it. It's also depth if injuries occur. Melvin isn't making "CC" type signings but he's doing all he can IMO to get this team competitive considering the market we're in. Not alot not to like so far.. |

DD is an innings eater and has pitched over 190 + besides last year the last 5.

Was Looper an innings eater? Can you say Shell game? Sickness, age, retreading ... I could see DD getting lit up without looking too far. |

I'm surprised to see this happen. But a 5.25 million dollar obligation is well worth it for a pitcher like Doug Davis. He used to drive me nuts when he pitched for the Brewers because he is a baserunner machine, but the 200+ innings, the 4.12 ERA and the 64.7 quality start percentage (which is the most impressive number IMO) he posted in 2009 tell me that this is a bargain signing and just too good for Melvin/Attanasio to pass up. To put some perspective on that quality start percentage, the average for a #1 starter in the NL last year was 67.0%....Davis is pretty close to that and the 64.7% he posted was actually better than that posted by the average #2 (60.7%). 22 quality starts...the only pitchers in the NL who exceeded that last year were Tim Lincecum (26), Jair Jurrjens (25), Adam Wainwright (25), Dan Haren (24), Ubaldo Jimenez (24), Randy Wolf (24), Josh Johnson (23), Bronson Arroyo (23), Wandy Rodriguez (23). Chris Carpenter, Javier Vazquez, Kevin Correia and Chad Billingsley also had 22 quality starts.
Roster/payroll update: In millions Current contracts: Jeff Suppan = 12.5 Prince Fielder = 10.5 Randy Wolf = 5.25 (4.0 million deferred) Trevor Hoffman = 7.5 David Riske = 4.5 Doug Davis = 4.25 LaTroy Hawkins = 3.5 Rickie Weeks = 2.75 Craig Counsell = 2.1 Todd Coffey = 2.025 Jody Gerut = 2.0 Gregg Zaun = 1.9 Carlos Gomez = 1.1 Ryan Braun = 1.05 Claudio Vargas = 0.9 --------------------------------- Bill Hall = 7.15 (dead money) Braden Looper = 1.0 (buyout) David Weathers = 0.4 (buyout) Arbitration (all estimates): Corey Hart = 4.5 Dave Bush = 4.25 Carlos Villanueva = 1.0 Pre-arbitration (all estimates): Yovani Gallardo = 0.7 Manny Parra = 0.6 Mitch Stetter = 0.5 Casey McGehee = 0.5 Alcides Escobar = 0.5 Total of above = 82.925 million Roster as it shapes up: Catcher = Gregg Zaun Infielders = Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks, Alcides Escobar, Casey McGehee, Craig Counsell Outfielders = Ryan Braun, Carlos Gomez, Corey Hart, Jody Gerut Starting pitchers = Yovani Gallardo, Randy Wolf, Doug Davis, Dave Bush, Manny Parra, Jeff Suppan Relief pitchers = Trevor Hoffman, LaTroy Hawkins, Todd Coffey, Mitch Stetter, Claudio Vargas, Carlos Villanueva, David Riske Now it will be interesting if Attanasio is willing to go into 2010 with a payroll over 84 million (which it goes to if you add 3 more minimum salary players for a total of 1.2 million). I wouldn't be surprised if Dave Bush is a late minute subtract (just as Claudio Vargas was a couple years ago). I really hope they keep Bush, because at least they would have some depth in the rotation whereas if he is let go or traded they are just as thin in the rotation as they always seem to be. |

Very possible but well worth the risk IMO when looking at his performance last year and the total investment that was made. Looper was terrible but he certainly didn't kill the ballclub and now the Brewers don't have to worry about him anymore unless you think that 1.0 million they are paying him this year totally handcuffed the front office. Now Suppan on the other hand..... |

I don't think they ever make a FA "CC-like" signing but as we know he will pull the trigger at the deadline for that "CC-like" rental. |

Looper was good from a W-L standpoint but that's about it. If Gallardo had his run support he would have won 18 games last year.
I like the Davis signing for a couple of reasons. First, he eats up innings. Second, while he gives up a lot of walks he is an upgrade in terms of quality starts. Like PJ said, he had 22 last year and that's pretty damn good. If you combine that with the fact he typically is able to last into the 6th inning it's a good signing. With Gallardo, Wolf, and Davis that's a solid 1-2-3 rotation but it'll be interesting to see what they do with Bush. I'd like to see him back as a 4th or 5th guy, but more than likely he'll get $2-3MM in arby and they are already stretching the payroll. |

Dave Bush has asked for 4.45 million in arbitration, and the Brewers have offered him 4.125 million. So if they keep him he's guaranteed to make something at or between those two numbers.
I've updated the payroll estimate with the $2,025,002 that Coffey has agreed too (using a rounded figure). |

That will be really interesting to see if they bring back Bush at that cost. I think given the fact they've added Wolf and Davis IMO he would make a really solid #4 or #5 guy in this rotation plus he gives them some depth if they did have an injury. That would leave Parra and Suppan and maybe Narveson to find it out for that 5th spot and that's just fine with me. The more the better.

How about that Hall contract that we're still paying for also? PJ does such a nice job talking about finances and if things are as tight as he suggests they are, then your margin for error on signing players and making mistakes is much lower. The Soup and Hall signing have really handcuffed us.
