So who is the untouchable stud that we absolutely can't trade for a #1 starter to get to the playoffs?

100 names you should know

of note:
5. Alcides Escobar, SS, Brewers

The Brewers fully expect Escobar, 23, to be their regular shortstop in 2010. Built for speed, he could hit at the top of the order, and he also has decent power for a middle infielder. The sure-handed Venezuelan is capable of the spectacular play in the field.

41. Mat Gamel, 3B, Brewers

Gamel, 24, once considered the Brewers' long-range third baseman, needs to bounce back from an inconsistent 2009 when he split time between Class AAA and the Brewers bench. The Brewers are concerned that his production drops dramatically in the second half. Last season he hit .336 in Class AAA, was promoted to the majors and then hit .234 when he went back to Nashville.

also, look at all those Indians on the list.

Not a fan of how the Brewers are handling Gamel's situation. He's too good of a prospect to not have a set position going into Spring Training.

Inconsistent 09 for Gamel? How about the way he was mishandled for the "inconsistent" Bill Hall playing over him. Gamel hit LH pitching better than HallnOates was at that point.

Is Brett Lawrie on schedule to replace Weeks? Is this Weeks' final year?

Yes, probably. At 2b at least if Lawrie continues his progression. Weeks played CF in college.

I would be shocked if Lawrie played second in 2011

I don't know if Gamel was mishandled. McGehee outperformed him and was able to stay in the lineup. McGehee played on a bad wheel to boot. Gamel will have to fight for a spot at this stage, unless McGehee regresses.

If I was Mat, I would have been taking OF drills all winter...

Best case scenario is that Gamel becomes a guy they can rely on to come off the bench and hit or give somebody else some rest. That or he really lights it up and is the guy to eventually replace Fielder at 1B.

The Brewers totally mishandled the guy and from the sounds of it he's a perfectionist that simply got sidetracked after he was sent back to Nashville last year. There is no doubt he's got some serious skills, but he also has to learn that no matter how good you are you have to earn it.

Then he wasn't mishandled at all. Maybe he needed a smack back to reality. Maybe he thought he was Ryan Braun. He's not. If he would have hit the way Braunie did when he come up, they would have played him.

But he'll have his chance. He has a + bat from what can be seen, and his glove is improving. If he can wrestle the 3B job from a ROY candidate last year from awful. If he can supplant a ROY candidate from 2009 who in 116 games hit .301, scored 58 runs, had 20 doubles, 16 HRs, and knocked in 66, then it's a good problem to have.

Gamel arrived late to camp with an injury that he didn't tell anyone about. That's not a good way to arrive when you have a legit chance to be on the opening day roster. I don't think he put himself in a good position with Macha or with the veterans. The thing is he has hit at every level and appears to have a big time bat. Now between him and Dale, they have to get the best out of him every day. Nothing makes a great player play better than competition.

I remember back when Molitor came up and Robin decided he was going to drive race cars or something like that. Molitor came out white hot and soon Robin was back in the fold.

Actually, IIRC, Yount was talking about going on the golf circuit back then.

I believe, once in camp, he quickly left to be with his girlfriend who was delivering their baby. That one is acceptable but quickly became much time lost between that and the injury...
