I think the speculation is the Packers will get a 5th rd. compensatory pick for AG

Round One = Gosder Cherilus/OT/Boston College
Thompson has shown in two out of three drafts that he'll completely ignore the team's primary need areas in the first round (Rodgers and Harrell). And even though Thompson obviously loves to trade down, he has still not traded that first round pick in three drafts with the Packers. So when looking at this pick, all I tried to do is find a player that I think would really be attractive to Thompson. I picked Cherilus because he is a legitimate top half of round one player from a physical point of view, and he was a real good player in college until his senior year when he moved to left tackle. If you grade off of his junior film and as a right tackle I think he really would deserve to be picked at least 10 spots higher than #30. And he would have appeal to the Packers because he could help out at guard right away (remember that Jonathan Ogden played guard early in his career for the Ravens), and could be a right tackle of the future that might be able to move over to left tackle and play that spot in a pinch. Round Two (from Cleveland ) = Trade down about 10 spots into the early third and pick up an early fourth round pick) Round Two = Tyrell Johnson/S/Arkansas State Thompson always makes a couple of picks that makes the draftniks scratch their heads and this would be one of those. Johnson is probably considered a fifth rounder by most but I think his stock is really on the rise and, just to me, he seems like the type of player that Thompson loves. He is a physically impressive player who is a big hitter that has a passion for the game of football. He's not great in coverage, but he has the physical skills to get better and I think could emerge as a complete safety. Round Three (via trade down from round two) = John David Booty/QB/Southern California Rhythm passer that is at his best on three-step drops and quick throws. I think he's good value here and he'd be attractive to the Packers with all the quick slants, curls and shallow crosses they run. Round Three = Jermichael Finley/TE/Texas No real comments necessary as he has already been linked to the Packers. His average/below-average combine workout could easily push him down to this spot. Round Four (via trade down from round two) = Justin Tyron/CB/Arizona State Has decent height and great speed but isn't real big yet and will need to spend time in the weightroom. Right now, he's likely to be out-muscled by opposing wide receivers at the line of scrimmage. If he can improve his strength, he has all the tools to be a starter in the NFL and excel in the type of defense the Packer's play. An ex-JUCO project with a great deal of upside potential. Round Four = Bryan Kehl/OLB/Brigham Young He may not be as athletic as his combine numbers indicate, but he's got the size and just enough athletic ability to backup at all three linebacker spots and perhaps push Poppinga for a starting role. Round Four (compensatory pick for Ahman Green) = Marcus Smith/WR/New Mexico Smith seems to have a lot of the traits that James Jones has. Not spectacular workout numbers, but he's big and physical and is more agile and fluid than one would expect looking at his size and workout numbers. Round Five = trade down into the sixth round and pick up an extra seventh round pick Round Six (via trade down from round five) = Kerry Brown/OG/Appalachian State His stock has really dropped over the last few months. He looks to be a very good fit for a zone-blocking scheme. Round Seven (via trade down from round five) = Brandon Miller/DE/Georgia He was a linebacker from almost his entire college career, but the Packers take him here and would try to develop him into a situational pass-rusher in the NFL. It would be an interesting late-round gamble. Round Seven = Chris Baloney/CB/Arizona State Like his college teammate Tyron, Baloney is somewhat of a project. Another big and fast cornerback that could be a couple years away from making an impact. |

Certainly some interesting picks, but I have two issues with this draft. First, I would be surprised if a CB isn't picked in the first 3 rounds and probably at least by the 2nd. While you are right that TT has not been driven by need for his 1st round pick, it does seem that need has entered into his thinking in the 2nd round. Arguably, Collins, Colledge, and Jackson could all be looked at as need driven picks.
The second issue is trading down to get a total of ten picks. Although this certainly has been TT's tact so far, I really wonder if there are enough open spots on the current roster before he will start having to lose some worthwhile players. I can't imagine he won't also pick up at least 2 or 3 FAs with $35 million in cap space, so that means opening up 12 or more roster spots. Right now I see at most roster spots for 2 QBs, 2 or 3 TE/FB, 1 OL, 2LBs, and 2 DBs, for a maximum of 10 spots. I think he will stick with his current 8 draft picks and a 2-3 FAs and have some pretty good battles for the last few roster spots. |

This guy sounds exactly like Atari Bigby. Needless to say, this pick would irk me a little. Replace this pick with a CB, and I would love this draft. |
