New York Times obituary
Pollack's films include The Slender Thread, in which Sidney Poitier plays a suicide hotline worker called by Anne Bancroft; They Shoot Horses, Don't They, in which Jane Fonda is a Depression-era marathon dancer; The Way We Were, in which Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford have a sappy love affair; Tootsie, in which Dustin Hoffman dresses as a woman to get an acting job; Out of Africa, which won Pollack his only Best Director Oscar; and a whole host of others. TCM will probably pre-empt a night of programming to show some of his films in the near future, although with the number of specials they're having in June, it's tough to figure out where they're going to find the time to do it. |
