I have a few Pink Floyd discs (mostly the Meddle to The Final Cut era). One thing I've always wanted to do was to go back and get their entire catalog on CD. I would even repurchase the ones I already have, as my current copies are the original CD issues (from WWWWAAAAYYY back, in fact The Wall was the first CD I ever purchased and that would have been in 1984/1985). The remasters that came out in the mid-90's would be real nice to have, but I've always put this off because as soon as I would go out and get them....then the nice box set would come out and I would wish that I would have waited.

Now with great disappointment I see that they are finally going to put all 14 studio albums in one new box set but they are packaging them as "mini vinyl replicas." Boo, hiss. While that may be cool for people that have an appreciation for the original albums artwork (of course it will be reduced to approximately 1/6th of it's original size), I refuse to pay $250 for CDs packaged in cardboard. Needless to say I am now completely disgusted because a collection I've been anticipating for years is now being released in a format I refuse to buy.

Here's Amazon.com's link to the set in case anyone out there finds this package more attractive than I do. It doesn't currently say so in the product description but the 17 discs will consist of all 14 studio albums (which are 16 discs worth of material when counting Ummagumma and The Wall as double CDs) and a bonus DVD which as of now will just contain commentary from the band members about Pink Floyd's 40-year history with the possibility of some music content being added later. The box that holds the CDs looks like it will just be a cardboard slipcase, not any sort of elaborate package. You can find further details on most of the Floyd fansites around the web.

I had the Wall on a 24K Gold CD but traded it for the Complete Original Star Trek Series.

Sometimes it's better to purchase the newer edition of CD's a lot of improvments have been made from when they were originally released.

Buffy had bought me a box set maybe ten or more years ago. I thought it was Shine On but looking it up on the Net I'm sure what she got me had more CD's than what Shine On has. I may have to dig it out of storage and check. I could have sworn it had every studio album through the Division Bell in it.

I've got same for "Dark Side of the Moon". Traded my brother my regular "Dark Side of the Moon". He knew I was a huge fan while he was just a casual listener.

Tim - I also have the Mobile Fidelity gold CD pressing of The Wall. They also did gold pressings for Dark Side of the Moon and Meddle but I don't have either of those. Sony did a gold pressing for Wish You Were Here, I don't have that one either.

Smedley - I don't have Shine On and I wish I would have bought it when it was first released. It had 9 discs if I remember right, pretty much Meddle through The Wall with a 10-song bonus disc of their early singles. The regular 9 discs came in black jewel boxes, and the set came with a hardcover book and a set of postcards, etc. I just didn't make that much money when it was released, already had most of the discs already, and couldn't justify shelling out the approximate $100 price tag on it. I've looked at them on ebay frequently, sealed copies go for $350-$400, used copies in mint shape generally sell for $200-$250, non-mint or incomplete sets generally go in the range of $100-$150 depending on the overall condition, contents, etc. It looks like it's a pretty nice set. I really wish I would have bought one when it was originally released.

Incidentally, if you're a huge Pink Floyd fan (or not even), I highly recommend seeing Austalian Pink Floyd. They are the best Pink Floyd cover band in the world. Good enough that David Gilmour had them play at his birthday party. They use some of Pink Floyds actual equipment and props, including one of the pigs from their '80's tours. They're currently touring North America. I took my nine year old son to see them last year when they were in the area. He was blown away. They'll be down here again in a month and we already have tickets. I believe they're playing the Milwaukee area this month some time.

I have had other people recommend Aussie Floyd to me, but I have to admit I've never been very big on the cover band concept.

You haven't heard DSOTM unless you have heard it on SACD. WOW! Unfortunately SACD is essentially a dead format now.

BTW, that boxed set looks great to me. I want it.

I've never been big on cover bands either but down here PBS showed a few clips of them as part of their fund raiser and I decided to give it a go. I have been to a ton of concerts (including attending Pink Floyds Delicate Sound of Thunder tour) and this easily ranks in the top ten for "shows/performances" I've seen. They do a hell of a job.
Looks like they played Milwaukee last night and now they're in Chicago for a couple days. Down here they sold out the venue for the night we're going so a second show was scheduled a couple days later.

If you get that boxed set you MUST give a full review of the sound/packaging in this forum. You have your orders! Wink

Saw them here in Mpls Monday night. Mind-blowing show to a packed house.

APF tours with special effects gear that actually used to belong to Pink Floyd.

They played Gilmour's birthday party a couple years ago, at his request.

Not your average cover band at all.

Just an update on the boxed set. One fansite is now reporting that there will not be a DVD included. It will just consist of the 14 studio albums with no audio/video extras.

The title of the set is "Oh, By The Way"

I don't know if I could even pick a favorite Floyd "epic" song.

I do think I would have to say that my favorite Pink Floyd album is Wish You Were Here.

One Pink Floyd release that I probably will be getting within the next week or so is the 3-disc reissue of Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I've never owned that album in any format. It probably won't turn out to be a favorite of mine because of the heavy psychedelic elements, but nonetheless I plan to get it as to eventually fill out the Pink Floyd collection.

If you haven't already, check out Pompei (video).
They rough out parts of Meddle and show a little work in the studio on Dark Side of the Moon.
Part of the reason I like Meddle is that, to me, it shows the style transition from early long jamming type Floyd to more Waters/Gilmour song writing Floyd. I think of Echos as the last of the long jamming style. And I love the song "One of the days".
"Wish You Were Here" is an awesome album. Been recently working on some of the guitar licks with my nine year old.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a guitar?

Is Floyd that much better when under the influence of illicit chemical compounds?

I don't know about Pink Floyd, but timesfour is.
