....from Milwaukee to my home town of Arlington, TX.
I have not been in a bowling league since the 1980's but I still found this interesting.
There will also be a 14 million dollar international bowling center built here.

U.S. Bowling Congress leaves Milwaukee for Texas

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee's attempts to keep its bowling heritage appear to have gone into the gutter.

The United States Bowling Congress, bowling's governing body, has decided to move its headquarters from suburban Milwaukee to Arlington, Texas. The group, which has more than 2.5 million members, had been in Milwaukee for more than 100 years.

The decision to roll on out of the city that helped make bowling famous — or was it the other way around? — is a tough one for the city, even the state.

The news came just one week after Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre announced his retirement. Although it wasn't unexpected, it was still a surprise.

The same with the decision announced Tuesday by the USBC. The group had been hinting for months that it wanted to leave Milwaukee. It cited the cost of doing business, including taxes and health care costs, in southeast Wisconsin as a major factor.

USBC's leaders decided to move to Arlington after hearing pitches from both communities at a meeting in Atlanta on Sunday.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and other area leaders said in a statement Tuesday they thought they had made a compelling case to keep bowling in Milwaukee. But it seemed the USBC had made its decision long before Tuesday's announcement, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker said in a statement.

"I don't know that there was anything more that anyone from the Milwaukee area could offer to counter those plans," Walker said.

The congress was founded in New York in 1895, and moved to Dayton, Ohio, before settling in Milwaukee in 1906.

The move from suburban Greendale, expected later this year, means the loss of more than 200 jobs in Wisconsin.

The bowling congress, though, calls it exciting. The move will set up the group, and the sport, to grow for decades, USBC President Jeff Boje said in a news release Tuesday.

The congress plans to team up with the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America, the industry's trade group, which is based in Arlington. Together, they plan to build a $14 million international bowling center.

The two groups also hope to strengthen the sport by working together on youth bowling and coaching programs.

Milwaukee has long counted bowling as a big part of its heritage. The main characters in the 1970s television show "Laverne and Shirley," which was set in Milwaukee, often bowled.

Also, the USBC's Masters Tournament has been regularly held in Milwaukee. It's not clear whether that will change. The USBC did not immediately return a call seeking comment on Tuesday

Score another one for Texas.

Pretty soon all that will be left in Milwaukee is empty warehouses and the Calatrava.

I guess the members wanted greater access to cocaine and cheap, disposable women.

Mr. Yuck,
I saw Mike Sherman on the news day before yesterday. He was wearing a hard-hat w/the Dallas Cowboys' Star on it. He was at the new D/C/B Stadium w/Jerry Jones.
