Herpes outbreaks can be controlled by eating plenty of L-lysine, e.g. cheese up to 8 oz/day, ideally as soon as the tingling starts. It also helps to avoid the precise sort of stress that brings them on, if you can identify it, or to eat lots of cheese when you can't avoid it. Lysine works by substituting for arginine when the virus is constructing proteins, which then don't work. Nuts (including peanuts!) have lots of arginine. Absolutely stay away from nuts when you're stressed, unless you eat lots of cheese too.
