Any word Perfect experts here? I have friend that lost 3 address books from there. I can't run Windows System Restore because some one setup a different backup program by Veritas. I haven't been able to figure out how to estore from that one yet. I have recovered some files which I think contain the date, but they are .fx, .fx2. .ix, and ix2 extensions and I can't figure out a program that will let me get a better look at them.

Yes, I seem to know a lot of inept comp users and unfortunately no very knowledgeable ones other than here.

That much I figured out. These files are part of some compressed address files as best as I can tell. When I change the extesion to .txt/xls, I get a bunch of gibbersish symbols, but the text mixed in is addresses. I figuring (hoping) there's a way I can extract the data from them.

You will need Wordperfect or something compatible in order to open the file. You can't just change the extension of a proprietary format and open it in another program.

I know that it won't open from Outlook, either. In the past, I've had to do an export from WP then an import into Outlook to move an address book.

Does your friend have his/her program CD for Wordperfect?

Word Perfect does not recognize the format and will not open it. I have valid versions of it on my machines and have the CDs for it. I found out it is part of a WP file format here. link

I changed the extension to try to gain some access to the info. I hoped it would work better, but really didn't expect it to. I still am hoping for a way around.

Have you looked at OpenOffice? I'm pretty sure it has WordPerfect capability.

Chuck, you posted a link to WP Office template files. .CCF, .FX, .FX2, .IX, and .IX2.

You are still looking for an address book, correct? They have .ABX extensions. Did you actually find any files with that extension?

I haven't used Corel Office in years but from what I'm seeing, it looks like Corel Address Book is a program that is part of the office suite. You should run that program (if it exists) to open the .ABX file. Then you can export the data to a format that can be read by other apps:

Export the Address Book for Travel

From TipWorld : For all the road warriors out there - you can export your address book to a file that you can view or print on any computer, even if Corel AB isn't installed. Open the AB, then select the tab for the AB that you want to take along. Choose Book, Export, Entire Address Book. In the Address Book Export dialog box, select the drive and folder where you want the file saved (this could be a zip drive or a floppy drive). Type the name in the File name text box and click OK. The file gets saved to ABX, which is really ANSI with a special header. You can open the file in WP, Word or Notepad. Ignore the gobbledee-gook at the top, just scroll down to the entries. Note: While groups won't export - the individuals within the groups will. Tip: If you have Quattro Pro available, this file opens very cleanly in a spreadsheet.

I haven't found any .ABX files. I saw that the files I found are listed as template files, but when I accessed them in the screwed up way I talked about, they do contain some contact info. When I tried to launch Corel Address Book, I got this error:
Could Not launch Corel CENTRAL Component Address Book
