I have an old 5 disc CD player that I dug out of storage to take to work. 3/4 of the time it works great. But then every once and a while it will constantly skip on CD's that I don't have any problems with in other players.
Any advice on tricks to get it working a little better? Do those cleaners work? |

I had a similar problem once ... I fixed it by placing the player on a very level surface. Those things can get touchy if they are not leveled well. My old player had round adjustable pads on the underside that I had to adjust some as well. If this doesn't work it could be that the laser is out of alignment. |

FYI, we have a Computer & Electronics forum now for these types of posts. I'll leave it here for a day or so and then move it over. To answer your question, try the cleaners for the CD itself as well as the player to clean the "eye" off. If you continue having issues a new one is probably less than $50-$75 as a last resort. You could also try the canned air and blow all the dust out that is probably in it. |

Thanks FRZ. I didn't realize that we had a forum for such things.
grbaypack, I'll get a level to double check that it's OK there. |

I have the same problem with my CD player in the van.
And I didn't know about the other forum either. |

Try a regular CD lens cleaner first, some people also will blast some canned air in there to try and dislodge something that might be caught inside by the laser. If that doesn't work try placing it on a level surface and use a good quality carpenters level to check how level it is sitting. Older CD players had no "anti-skip memory chip" so keeping it level and shake-free are more important.
If it is level and still continues to skip then unplug it, take the outside shell off (usually just a few screws) and look in the area of the laser lens. I had one that skipped and there was a piece of hair that had become suspended near the laser housing. I used a tweezers and removed the debris. I also dipped a Q-tip in some rubbing alcohol and manually cleaned the lens. Haven't had a problem with it since and it's going on 15 years old. |

Buy a new one. You can probably find one that will be cheaper than the lens cleaner. Heck, get one that also plays DVDs if you want.

Easy fix.
Stop using it 1/4 of the time. You're welcome. |
