I have a brother that's going to school overseas right now. I have NFL Superfan, so I get the games via shortcuts in 30 minutes. Recording that to DVD is approximately a 1 GB file. Sending DVDs to him will either take a long time or be pretty expensive. What are my best options for setting up a way to get him these files electronically? I have a decent DSL connection and he does too.

Do you know the upload speed on your DSL connection? That's going to be the bottleneck. Most are in the 128K to 368K range. It's going to take a LOOOONG time to upload a 1GB file.

What you will need is some "space" somewhere on the net to upload your files. It's been a long time since I used it but I have used X Drive in the past with decent results.

May want to try a P2P application like Limewire. It'll prompt you to share a directory. Then I believe he can search specifically for you and get at it.
Still going to take a long time.

Xdrive - would give me a place to upload to and then he could download from there, correct?

Lime wire - I would load it onto my PC and then he could download it from my PC to his directly?

Correct on both. For Xdrive, you guys would just need to share the account name and password.

The thing with the 2nd option is that it would rely on both of your PC's being up and running for the duration of the transfer.

Your brother will probably be able to download the file 4 to 10 times faster than it takes you to upload the file, depending on the difference between your upload speed and his download speed.

also with limewire whomever finds the file would also be able to download it so instead one person downloading the file it may get bogged down by others also tapping in and downloading the file.

Unless you set maximum number of downloaders to one. I'm not real familiar with Xdrive. A little surprised that a place on the web would offer 1G of file storage free.

Actually they offer 5 GB free.

And it's not surprising at all considering GMAIL and other EMAIL providers give you 2 or more GB mailboxes. Storage is cheap. The interfaces that you use usually have plenty of advertising. They are also in bed with AOL so they have some solid financial backing.
