Bought them a Samsung 50 inch

http://www.epinions.com/Samsung_HL_S5086W_Television/display_~reviews

They had in on closeout for $999.99 only problem they were sold out in both Dubuque and Davenport....I wheeled and dealed on the floor model. Got it for $900. Mom and Dad were thrilled. This same TV was going for 1600ish last October.

Now I need to start looking for a TV for myself.

Looks like an extended warranty might be a good idea.

on a $900 TV I wouldn't bother. The warranty would be in the 25-35% range of what the entire TV cost. not worth it, IMO.

Exactly the reason we didn't. they wanted 225 for the extended warranty. I offered them 825 for the set and told them I would buy the extended and they wouldn't deal.

Actually, I'm not a believer in extended warranties.

My point was more that, based on the consumer reviews I linked, it doesn't appear to be a very reliable set.

"New TV for parents."

Well, I suppose it depends on the size of the TV and how you get along with your parents, but I personally, would not make that trade.
