I bought a new computer not long ago, and foolishly had it loaded with Office 2007. Excel still has that little "X" in the upper right to close the file (but not the program) but when I'm in Word I don't see it anywhere. I'm lazy, I hate having to go to "Office Button" and then "Close". Is there a similar shortcut to the "X"?
I wanted to keep up with the Office updates in case I ended up with an assignment that used Office 2007. Any reason why Bill insists on throwing the baby out with the bathwater??? |

Try Alt+F4. That should just close the active window and not the whole program.

That closed the whole program.
I broke down and scoured through the "Help" section. Ctrl+W will close the active document. I guess that will have to do since there was no mention of the "X". I wonder why they decided to dump the "X" from Word. |

I have 2007, and I have the 'x' in the top, right hand side.
Try the 'view' tab. If you have bumped that up, it may have changed the layout. |

Easy fix.
I know you said you hate the Office Button thing, but you'll only have to do this one time. Go to the office button toolbar, right click on "Close" and select "Add to QuickAccess toolbar". It will create a shortcut button on the top toolbar. That is all you have to do for the future, just click that button. I recommend putting all of your common buttons up there. Makes it really easy. BTW, I have 2007 and I love it. It takes some getting used to, but it really has some nice features. |

Thank you, this worked. I still miss the "X" though! El - I have an X in the upper right, but it closes the entire program. |

I guess I don't understand the problem then? I'm guessing there is an easier way to do what you want to do, but I'm not clear on the problem.
If you have one document open, and want to close it, why wouldn't you close the entire program? Unless you want to close an old document and open another one. In that case, open the new document, then use the 'x' in the top right hand corner of the old document to close it. Now the old doc is closed and you have a new document open to work with. As long as you have a document open, word is open. Or are you concerned that word is not handy? Instead of using the 'start' button to open word, you can add it to you quick launch in the lower left hand side of the task bar (next to 'start'). Then, when you want to open word, you can just click on the quick launch to open word (or any other program you frequently use). *EDIT - umm, what pakrbakr said. Only he said it better. |

Eureka! (Or maybe...DOH.)
My old Word would have the "X" in the document window to close the document. (In other words, two "Xs" in the upper right corner. I see now that the one X in the upper right will close the multiple (or active, as you will) documents, closing the last document also closes the program. So if I want to close a document and create a new one...open the new one first, then close the former. You think this is bad, you should see my try to figure out my new cell phone. |
