I'm running Windows XP and eveytime the automatic update installs a Software Distibution Service 3.0 my internet disappears. I have three browsers, IE 6, MSN Explorer and Firefox. None will work until I do a system restore to the day before this update is installed.

Some hotfixes ain't so hot.

What's the number of the hotfix? Have you tried searching for it on Microsoft's website?

Some hotfixes can knock out your interface card, especially if you're using wireless. Try downloading the latest drivers for your card, and then try the hotfix again.

Do you have Windows Defender installed?

No Windows Defender. The update is actually five parts, the Service 3.0 is the listing given under system restore after it's installed.

Microsoft customer service has me connect to Microsoft Help Support.

These are the updates listed for July 9th.

1) SQL Server Security Update for SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (KB948110)
2) Office 2003 Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (KB953432)
3) Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)
4) Office 2003 Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB953465)
5) Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)

Uninstall KB951748, if you can. It has well-documented problems, especially with ZoneAlarm firewall.

I was going to question a software firewall (third party in particular) conflict as well. If running one can you disable it and see if that makes a difference?

Yes you can, but I'd much rather run without the hotfix than without my firewall. And judging from some of the complaints I've read, it sometimes affects other firewalls besides ZoneAlarm, including Windows firewall.

The Word from Microsoft:

quote:
Before going further, I need to confirm if the computer is installed with Zone Alarm Firewall and the security option set to high. If yes, it could be caused by incompatibility between Windows Update MS08-037 and Zone Alarm Firewall.

Please understand that the updates that are offered in bulletin MS08-037 prevent the DNS service from conflicting with the reserved ports that other services may be listening on. However, if we set Zone Alarm Firewall security to high, it will prevent this update from modifying some DNS service related file. Both Microsoft and Zone Alarm are actively working on the issue.

Speak of the devil... today my son told me his internet connection had been down for a few days. Under add/remove programs I saw that that very same hotfix was applied on July 9th.

Uninstalled it and everything works like a charm again.

The suggestion was meant as an aid to troubleshooting the problem. Not a permanent fix.

I just had the same problem yesterday. If I turned off Zone Alarm, everything worked OK. I didn't have security set to high but it still affected this PC. So I uninstalled Zone Alarm and reinstalled with the most current version. Problem solved.
