I was thinking of purchasing a GPS system (tom-tom, Garmin) for my daughter... Any suggestions?

We have a Garmin and have been very happy with it. My in-laws have the cheapest one they sell and it does the trick just fine. We have a mid-level Nuvi and I really like it.

TomTom - ONE 3rd Edition GPS
Model: 1N01.081 | SKU: 8476543

I got mine on sale for $99. It is easy to update via the internet. You just connect it to a USB port. I've run it through the wringer by setting up a destination and then just back roading and it always finds a way to get me there.

I have the cheap Garmin, and bought one for each of the kids. They serve our purpose. If a person is going to be doing a lot of traveling, I might agree with getting all the bells and whistles, but for the little we need, I don't think we'lll ever get lost.

I have a navigation system in my cell phone. Works very good. The only problem I have ever had was when I went to Atlanta last year and was downtown and teh buildings blocked my signal.

Garmin Nuvi 360 here. Voice directions, blue tooth to sync with your phone, mp3 player... Everything works well. No complaints with it at all.

That's the model I got. It works, but it has a lot of bugs in their mapping system. I could be traveling on a highway, and it thinks I am stuck in some cornfield somewhere, and it isn't just recently constructed roads either. It has a map-correcting feature, but I haven't been able to figure that out yet.

My other complaint is that the "quickest" route rarely ever is, as it usually insists on keeping me on the most main roads even if it greatly increases the mileage of the trip. I'm usually able to get around that by using the "travel via" feature.

Other than that, it works. I alternate voices between the British woman Jane (Jane, you ignorant slut!), or the American man Richard (Dick!).

I haven't had any problems with unknown roads except for HWY 57 going to Door County because it is new. I usually hook it up to the computer once a month to see if there are any updates. The one thing that does drive me nuts is that it always seems to want to stay on main roads when I start taking the backroads. It eventually gets straightened out once you get far enough away from the main road.

Do the TomToms have free map upgrades? I thought you had to buy those.
With regard to the backroads, aren't there preference settings that can be adjusted that might affect how bad it wants to get you back on a highway?

I see that model is normally $350, on sale here for $299. Other than announcing street names, I wonder what that one has that my cheap $129 Garmin doesn't. Oh, it has a bigger screen too

There are free map upgrades with the TomTom. There are also other free ad-ons, such as other voices, points of interest, and colors.

The settings on the TomTom are for the "Quickest" or the "Straightest" route. Quickest will almost always keep you on the main road regardless if it is the quickest or not. Straightest will take you on any little dinky road. My fiancee has a no-name GPS that has a third option of "Most Economical" which will get you there the quickest by utilizing secondary roads besides the interstates and such. I wish the TomTom had that option.

I'm thinking it may have adjustable preferences like Toll Roads, Interstates, County Highways, Secondary streets, etc. May be able to adjust those in such a manner that it won't try to force you onto the nearest highway.

Surprised at the maps. Seems like in the past, the GPS people expected to make some serious coinage by selling map upgrades. Maybe that hasn't gone as well as they hoped.

Don't use one but I've always heard the "Tom Tom" mentioned on the Bob and Tom show.
