Hey all.
I'm having some really frustrating issues playing my DVD's maxed out on my new computer. Any game I play on it, anytime I'm in Photoshop, or browsing the web, the monitor looks incredible. However, when I go full screen, and play a DVD, it looks really grainy. I'm using an Acer 22 inch P223W monitor, native 1,680 x 1,050 resolution. Monitor has a 2,500:1 contrast ratio, 5 ms refresh rate. I have not yet purchased any monitor calibration software (will do so at the end of the month). I know that a LCD basically contains more pixels per inch than a TV, and beyond a DVD's native resolution, there is going to be a loss of clarity. But the loss I'm experiencing is pretty horrible. I've got a great vid card (EVGA geForce 8800 GTS 512 (G92), and I'm using the nvidia onboard control panel. Can anybody recommend anything I can do? I have the latest drivers installed from EVGA's site, and for the monitor. I've tried VLC, and Cyberlink's players, and it's still not what I would expect...not even close. Thanks! |

Most multi-format playback software has internal algorithms that try to "optimize" the picture - because usually the video source is something streamed or compressed. Try using a player meant specifically for DVDs - like PowerDVD or something similar. I'm pretty sure you can download a trial version at download.com.
There's certainly nothing wrong with your PC - sounds like a nice system. It may be that your expectations are a little high. DVDs (not HD-DVD or Blu-Ray) are only 720 x 480 resolution - so the higher your monitor's resolution, the more pixelated it will look. The first time I watched one on my big-screen TV, I was pretty disappointed. |

Most DVd burners you buy usually come with a OEM copy of PowerDVD |
