Okay, so I was home this past weekend and my sister has a wireless router (secure network). She gave me the WEP key and I was able to connect to her network (at least it said I was connected) but I couldn't get to the internet.
Just to make sure it wasn't a problem with my notebook, I went to a local hotel parking lot and accessed the internet via their 'unsecure' wireless network. Any idea why I can't get to work? Same thing is happening with my daughter in the house that she is living at now. They have a secure network, but she has the WEP (or WPA) key but she can't access the internet either. PA????? |

Make sure the LAN setting is set to automatically detect your internet connection.

Just a guess.....
Does the network administrator need to grant some sort of access beyond the encryption key? |

That's what I was thinking Finn. I have my network set up at home that allows only the MAC address of the computers I allow on the network, but when my sister set hers up, she doesn't remember ever choosing anything about MAC addresses. However, if she was only allowing certain MAC addresses, I wouldn't have even been able to get on her network. I was connected, just couldn't get to the Net. Color me very confused.
My laptop was sitting right beside her laptop and I had a stronger signal than she had. |
