Desktop machine had a problem booting up correctly. When turned on after a minute or so the screen displays:
Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in Selected Boot device_ If I hit Ctrl Alt Del here, it finishes starting up normally How do I go about fixing this? |

Check to see what the default device is to load from. 99% of the time you want to boot from the main hard drive.
Is there a CD or floppy in a drive when it's turned on? Take those out. |

All the removable media drives are empty.
I accessed the Bios and in the Boot priority order it has: [1st Boot Device Removable Dev.] [2nd ATAPI CD ROM] [3rd Hard Drive] I switched the priorities so that the hard drive was first and saved and exited. When I reboot it does the same thing. I access the Bios and it has not changed the order. Is there another way to change this or I am completely off here? |

It's a good idea to keep the priorities the way you found them. Think about it. |

I can see that, but since it's asking to select the proper boot device, it seemed like it wasn't happy with the order. It's really moot as it won't allow me to make changes. It keeps them in that order.

Saving properly? Most of the time you have to save your changes after changing. |

And chance you have an external USB drive or something else like an IPOD connected?

You can try a couple of things if you boot off the OS CD. I'm assuming it's XP.
Select repair and this will boot you into the recovery console. Some things you can try in there. "fixboot C:" will write a new windows boot sector on the C: drive "fixmbr" will repair the master boot record "chkdsk c: /p" will check and repair any errors on the disk I'd run through those. There is a good chance that one of them will correct the problem. |

I can't remember what it is you hit but we had a similar problem with my daughters computer and by hitting something like F5 when it was booting it reset the normal boot sequence eliminating the problem.
I'm using F5 as example because I can't remember what it was but I think it flashed on the screen what the properly F? was when starting up. |
