I usually simply use the internet at work and have never really needed it at the house. Now I recently put it in and have a laptop that I want to go wirless with. I have a router, but Ive talked with a few people that tell me I need a netword card. Which ones are decent without breaking the bank on one?
Also, I would like to hood up my Xbox 360 to it as well? How do I go about doing that? |

What is the make and model of your laptop. Many of them have internal PCI slots where you can install an internal wireless card.

I have a Dell 600m. It has Centrino, and I can detect wireless networks. Is that the same thing?

If you can detect wireless networks, then it has built in wireless. I'm assuming that your router is not wireless. You would need to replace it with a wireless router or add a wireless access point to yous existing router. It's easier to just replace the router itself. Many cheap options out there. I'd suggest the Linksys WRT54G. |

I ordered service through Qwest and they sent me a modem that they say is a wireless router as well. They told me that I needed a card so that I could set up WEP. I am not going to lie, I really dont know jack when it comes to this stuff.

Sometime they ship those wireless routers out with the wireless portion disabled. I know TDS does that locally.
You said that your laptop can dectect wireless networks, so that tells me it has wireless built in. You may need to access the setup on your router to enable wireless. |

I wouldsay you should be able to contact Qwest and they should walk you through enabling the wireless. Verizon did for me

If your a new Qwest member your modem is also a router, you should have been asked if your wanted wireless service when signing up but it maybe they do it automatically now with everything is going wireless. Keep in mind that even thou it maybe wireless you still can use network cables to connect things such as your X-box if you don't want to purchase a wireless adapter.
Now if you need a network card for your computer they can be found pretty cheap, I almost always buy from www.newegg.com , but they maybe saying you need the card from Qwest for the modem/router in which you'd have to contact them. Qwest usually uses Antec modem/routers and it just needs a card from Qwest to make it wireless. If this is your modem you don't have wireless: This one does: |

Thanks Tim, I actually got it working last night without a card, just by fooling around with it. So could I still hook up the 360 wirelessly or would I need to use a cord?

I have mine hooked up wireless. If you want to go that route, you will need a wireless bridge. That plugs into the Ethernet port of your XBOX and makes it wireless. Don't pay the extra $25 for a "gaming" wireless bridge. That's just a matter of paying for something that looks cool sitting next to your XBOX. Mine (a Netgear) sits behind it so it doesn't matter that it doesn't look cool. Wired is always better and more reliable than wireless if it's feasible. CAT6 is not faster than CAT5. It's marketing hype more than anything else. |

I have my 360 hooked up with wireless too. It's in the basement, my router is on the second floor in the opposite corner of the house and it works great.

I just dumped Charter internet and scored a great deal with DSL and asked for the gateway shown above(the 2nd pic)instead of a conventional modem. I am interested in buying a used, lightweight laptop, mostly for internet use. Would like to utilize wireless. Any suggestions where to find used ones?? |

What are you looking to spend? With prices of laptops these days, I don't think I would bother with used. Maybe a refurb with a warranty but not used.
The company I work for bought me one of these a few months ago when they were going for around $650. I added the longer life battery and an extra AC adapter and it was still less than $800. It's a good combination of being light but still has a nice 15" widescreen display and I get 6-8 hours on the upgraded battery. http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us...&oc=i6400sd310&s=bsd If you are looking to go really cheap, Tiger Direct has some refurbs starting at about $300 after rebate. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=17 |

A few weeks ago, with advice from Henry, and past experience with Acer desktop, I bought
an Acer 5102WLMI I got it for $749 after $150 rebate. It is now going for $789 after $110 rebate. I really like it |

RE: DSL, does anyone use DSL via Direct TV or Dish Network?
I have TimeWarner RoadRunner cable modem service and TW Cable TV... I hate their service and the cost. I'm looking at Dish Network and Direct TV for TV service but will need to replace the internet service. Thoughts / comments? Pros/Cons of DSL? |

DirecTV internet service is extremely high priced. DSL just uses your current phone line and is a lot cheaper. |
